We coud be at least be 2 or 3 wins further up if we had some more astute work from the coach. Although many on here rave about Ryles - and personally I like him and the things he is trying to do - he is making as many rookie errors as any of the players.
What does "astute" mean? It means tactically aware, understanding weaknesses, communicating clearly and applying all the correct resources available.
One of the obvious things last night was that Ryles overplayed Moses role - we became so predictable. We need more tactical adaptibiity and creativity.
Farnsworth sat defensively on Moses when ever he went to the blindside he loves. Just about every set Moses got his hands on the ball (nothing wrong with that) but every time the variation was negligible. There had to be room for shorter kicks as well as the perenial long ones. Not once did Moses really take a run. Were there occasions he could have lifted the pace? Could Moses sometimes be used as a dummy with a point of attack coming from somewhere else?
Are we contestng the ball enough? Having your kicker back is one thing, but at no stage did we get into a position to really challenge the receiver. On the odd occasions we did, we did not contest the kick. It seems the players are under instructions to stand next to the receiver and hope he drops the ball. I do not understand this non contested kicks. The same applies with the drop outs and in some cases defensively where they allowed the attacking side to make the mistake. That's fine when it works, but bloody awful if it doesn't. Perhaps, it is in part the fear of being penalized or sin binned? It's an areas that is undermining us.
Another issue is Ryles' selections.
Matterson should have been playing last night and he would have provided a completely different drive from the "pigs". I thought Junior tried hard but he was a bit out of sorts, almost like him needing to be prodded to get moving (herding cattle). Nothing wrong with Hopgood and Williams games, they are the workers in the pack and the people on here do not understand that or more the point appreciate it.
Russell is honest as the day is long, just a second grader filling in and he stops progress by not creating anything. Does him being solid actually weaken our game?
This game was there for either team to win on the night. Unfortunately, it was a flick of the coin and we lost.
One final thing: people need to get over the constant BA bashing. The guy has gone. But it seems that anything the side does badly is laid on his shoulders. The other things we need to understand are that its fine to have plenty of money to spend, but unless the people we want want to come to Parramatta and play for us, then they won't come! Build it and they will come, selections and poor communication with players is not part of building anything. There are players in Reserve Grade that are going well that are not geting a look in, there are players in first grade that seem to being favoured, I don't no why?

Yes Pops, I agree with everything you said, except Matterson. I see what your seeing with this team and this coach.
One thing i'll say about Matterson - He is not our future and the coach wants his Salary cap $$ next year to spend on someone else, Big Picture me thinks.
I think your right Bluey, but what i don't understand is that he has been our best forward in Reserve Grade for the times he has been there. He gets picked at 18 every week and then is dropped. He participated on fan day before the comp started, put his heart into it and was one of our best trainers.
Unless he is a fcuking serial killer what's going on? If he is the best where everyone see's is our weakest area, why aren't we using him. Dyllan Walker would not have had 2 Bob from a Parra supporter 6 weeks ago, now we all love him. He is typically a character that our supporters can't take to because many can't judge a good player. Walker has always been a good player, I rated him at Souths when he played Origin in the centres, our experts on here seem to have no understanding of his skills. people didn't want JAC and I argued the same principles, Poor Matterson cops it as a "tight arse" (you can't write a post on him without the 4k fine being mentioned), and its well explained. He has had concussions ect but for some reason people hate him.....it is fcuking simple, if he is good enough he should be playing. We may have an extra 4 points on the board, because a quality player has been the difference for at least 2 of our last losses.
This is nothing to do with salary cap or options, people get over your petty biases, its like Chief there again going bananas over BA.....get over it.
You don't have players like Matterson on your roster and not use them.......!!!!!!..... unless there is a bloody good reason, if there is one why is he picked at 18 then discarded? My Grandmother used the expression of cutting off your nose to spite your face!
I'm going to have a small stab at it Pops.
Ryles has always wanted Matterson gone, he said so in a public statement well publicised when he first signed. let's assume for whatever reason. I've got my thoughts and the rumours from within the club and it's based around a lack of Team first mentality, and a very strong desire by Matterson to not play with "what the club medicos see as minor injury / pain ". Ryles gave him a chance in first grade and Ryan pulled out on game morning against medicos assessments with a pain issue.
Second if Ryles wants him gone i).Matterson went against his coaches wish's and took up his contract option for this year and next year, this would at the very least grate on the coach and ii). By playing him in Reserves constantly could bring in the players union in regards to bullying etc etc with no chance to play first grade. By Ryles naming him as 18 and then withdrawing him dosnt warrant the players union to become involved.
I think to continue his rebuild and moving the team forward Ryles may be playing the long game with Ryan, possibly to our immediate detriment but long term a better result perhaps.
Thats the best I can come up with, from what I can see.
On Walker, I have said all along, he improves our team out of sight.
I agree bar one thing. The taking up the option seen as a bad thing he did to Ryles and the club, he was entitled to it he had every right to take and we had to accept it.
As for bullying if he is played in NSW cup, form is subjective, Ryles can say he has players he prefers at this stage. How can they prove he is unfairly not being picked? Could argue Joash Papali'i should be picked based on his form.
I agree with the rest though BE.
Simple Pops JR doesn't like the character make up of Matto that's the only reason he isn't playing FG.In the off season rumours were rife Matto was on the block and then Matto signed his option when he couldn't find another club I see nothing has changed and JR and the club want him out the door.
I think it's that simple Mattos not character type JR wants in his team play regardless. So reserve grade on big coin it is.He could have done the same with DB to but again I think he believes the latter has more to offer less the distraction.
Not sure that is a good reflection on Ryles to be frank. I bet you guys would either cut the strings or manage your way around it, in your respective businesses.
A lot of what Bluey, LB and Coryn said have a "conjecture" about them but it belies the fact that he picks him in the 22 and mostly 18 every week.
Can you not see that is poor management regardless of your individual subjective opinions on should he be playing on "face value".
We know/guess the rhetoric but know nothing about the facts.
Of course he does, but do we have the ability to get players out of their deals as that's our only option to get quality. Clubs can with money but can we?
I do believe this is where getting a player like Galvin helps us immensely. He doesn't rely on his Halfback to create something or organise, he can create on his own, that's the type of versatility we need.
Don't forget that we missed 2 conversions, which was the difference. Yes we probably should have won this game, but if Redcliffe lost they would have said the same thing. With Lomax back we can expect him to ice those conversions, which could make a significant improvement to our chances of winning.
Regarding Matterson, I doubt he gets on the NRL field this season. Not sure what's happening there, but that's the reality. This game is closer than it would have been a month ago.
Good points Finney!
