'Been in a grand final for them': Knights coach's gentle reminder after Eels fan booed Dylan Brown

Liam O'Loughlin

Knights coach Adam O'Brien has given a reminder to Parramatta fans after they booed outgoing star Dylan Brown during last weekend's game.

The 24-year-old recently made the decision to take his talents up to Newcastle for the next decade, but will see out the remainder of this season with the blue and gold.

However, as the side copped a rough loss against the Wests Tigers in round two, Brown was on the receiving-end of some negative feedback from his own fans.

While the five-eighth hasn't reacted to the booing, O'Brien admitted he did "feel for" Brown, who will earn $13 million over his 10-year deal with the Knights.

"No doubt [it would be hard] for any young person to cop that amount of criticism," the coach told media on Thursday.

"I can't speak for the fans, but what I will say is that he's been a really good servant for that club, he's been in a grand final for them.

"He's still the same player he was three weeks ago ... I do feel for him."

Brown has spent his entire career to date with the Eels and despite having options in his favour to remain at the club, the money on offer at Newcastle was too good to refuse.

His form early in the year - especially after inking a mammoth contract - had led to plenty of criticism, but O'Brien is refusing to let it cloud Newcastle's judgement.

"I haven't lost any faith in our purchase," he said.

"I'm really happy with us being able to bring Dylan to the club next year and I know what he'll look like in our team.

"As for how he's going there at Parramatta, I know he'll have his mind very fixated on this season and he wants to end on a really good note at that club."

Brown will be in action for the Eels on Sunday afternoon against the Bulldogs.

  • If Brown is worth over a million as a player, what is Ivan Cleary worth as a coach?

    • If Dylan worth over $1m Whats Nathan Clearly worth and What Cameron Munster worth

  • Your problem now Adam, that is if you are still there.

  • What is Adam going to say? "It's shit but have to get on with it?"

You have a guy who is bought to be a 7 who says he's a 6 who doesn't know there are clauses in his deal when manager says there are.

Brown is playing them for a fool, just taking the money and good on him for it. But they'll be like "How do we get you to play better?" "Well I'm not a Halfback for starters".

    • I think you will find that he doesn't really need to be the halfback, even if wearing the 7. Did you watch the change in Newcastle attack last week? Pretty slick. Ponga will basically play as the 7 in attack and most likely make Brown look pretty good. Also at any time Brown plays on the left at Knights, he has Dylan Lucas, Bradman Best, and Greg M outside him. Much more strike for the defence to 2nd guess what is coming at them. That is the vision that was sold to Dylan. Apart from the money, why wouldn't he choose that?

      • You can also argue DB playing alongside one of the best halfback in Mosses and has Lomax, Fox and young Iongi outside of him.

The vison is purely $ sign. He knows he isn't worth that money so he's securing his future. Nothing more, nothing less.

        • Of course it's about the $$.

Though, when looking at squad for Eels, Lomax mainly plays on the right, we basically have no left edge backrowers that can defend and Penisini is slow and struggling at the moment.

      • Why wouldn't he choose that? Because the Eels have looked after him since he was 15 years old. Because the Eels have had to let go promising juniors to accommodate him. Because of the length of his Eels contract promising juniors have left because their pathway is (was) blocked. Because the Eels just rehabilitated his ACL. Because the Eels supported him during a recent personal crisis. What if you took your life partner out of poverty and married them only to find they started sleeping with one of your friends because he had more money than you?

        • Nicely said! It's what I said all along, it's not the fact he walked out it's about the damage he has caused & their plenty of it. How is he going to end on a good note?

  • Worth the money has very little to do with it.

Supply and Demand is a real thing when it comes to halves.

That contract is the price of doing business if you want a good half and you want to pull him out of a club.

You think this deal is bad what was it doing the same for a foward fark me Tino and Jason will be lucky to survive half those deals if we are talking worth and they aren't even halves. The latter has fallen off the cliff 3 years ago and still has 2-3 to go on a mill per.Tino's got 8-9 to go and his first year pretty much he was out injured.
