A ALTERNATIVE TO GALVIN

I'm not a huge fan of Galvin primarily because I think he has big ego and because who his manager is , having your halves both managed by Isaac Moses is a recipe for future disaster and we simply don't have the management who could handle Isaac if he decided to pull one of his tricks .

The other thing is that it is unlikely that Galvin will be available until 2027 .  Longi has all the skills and ability to be a outstanding 6 which then leaves a vacancy at fullback ,  I would do whatever it takes to get Selwyn Cobbo as it's a safer bet paying big dollars for Cobbo than it is for Galvin .

  • Don't mind that idea Frankie.... I'm not convinced on Galvin for somewhat different reasons. He is a talent but I would prefer to pay Cobbo a million before Galvin.

Cobbo is a game breaker and they are a lot rarer than 5/8's that add value.

  • Yeah, Selwyn Cobbo is an amazing athlete and natural footballer..I wouldn't mind that.

I also wouldn't mind Galvin, the disaster that has been going on around his escape from they tigers is regrettable but i dont think any of his making. He is very young, even for his young age... a simple young man that lives for footy that is ill advised.

Injury aside, he has the potential to be something really special and has the Eels at his core....

  • No way I'd be moving Longi and risking him wanting to leave for another opportunity to play fullback somewhere else. The kid didn't hone his skills in Penrith for 3 years in nsw cup to come play 5/8.

    • Being moved from fullback to 6 is hardly a demotion , it not like he will be moving from 1 to play in the centres or wing .

  • I said this in previous posts, Iongi is a 5/8 just find a fullback

    • Just find a Fullback, yeah like that is so easy to do. We have Papali'i but would he be better than Iongi? Why weaken a position to strengthen another when i believe it is more important to have a quality Fullback over a quality 6, if you have a class 7, like we currently do. We as a team would be better off having a class Fullback over a class 6, we can get by with a good 6 alongside Moses

But saying just find a Fullback would be like saying just get a Halfback, it is not that easy. Yeah we found Iongi, but that is luck as well. Not always are we going to find an Iongi.

  • I've always thought about Iongi to 5/8 even before Brown made his intentions clear, however I really would prefer to leave him at fb for the foreseeable future as he's still learning the position.

I really doubt we'll look at another fb

    .

    • We could go with Iongi at 6 and Papali'i at 1 who i think would be a very good FB at NRL level. But as i said in my comment, Ryles identified Iongi before anyone else as someone he wanted at the club. Therefore it would be believed he is considered to be a Fullback only. I do not think Ryles would be reactionary in that "We lost Dylan, not what we planned, oh well let's try Isaiah there" His plan is for Iongi to be 1 with Brown here and will continue that with whoever the new 6 is they consider.

In 5 years time would they consider it if we need a 6 and have a quality Fullback in the pathways? Yeah i think they could, unless Iongi is an Origin Fullback for QLD and is just killing it. More times than not most Fullbacks that try to transition to 6 fail. Lockyer was a big anomaly.

  • Frankie, I like your thinking here but I'm quite comfortable with Galvin playing alongside Moses. With no knowledge of what will happen I think we will get him for next year.

  • Iongi was brought to the club to play Fullback. He was identified by Ryles as soon as he was hired as a player he wanted. He is learning to play FG, why mess that up by training him in a brand new position where he needs to defend more? He played over 60 games in NSW Cup, not one of them was at 6. Only time from memory he played 6 was for Tonga U18's.

I think he could do it if trained earlier on but right now he is progressing very well at Fullback i wouldn't mess with that. Papali'i is a very good talent and trying to get him in somewhere makes sense, he would be better suited to Fullback in NRL than 6 but of course Iongi is there. Papali'i playing some 6 in Cup shows the club would be more inclined to play him at 6 before Iongi.

I am not going to say it is a bad idea as i think Iongi could be a very good 6, but at this stage his development at Fullback is even more important as is him getting used to week in week out NRL football. I reckon keep it simple for him in a position he can play and play well. I would, even though his size concerns me, push towards Papali'i at 6 if anything.

"Exactly. Let the kid figure out NRL first and become a seasoned first grader. Why complicate it further just to try and strengthen a position that is quite frankly the least of our worries. A fullback is more important than a Five-Eighth.
