Why Fuifui Moimoi's a cut above his rivals

By Josh Massoud | August 14, 2009 12:00amBOASTING 108kg worth of pure Tongan muscle, Parramatta hardman Fuifui Moimoi has long been a hair-raising prospect for opposition defences. But weekly visits to his local hair salon have lifted Moimoi's game - and cult status - to another level. While the 29-year-old prop has been consistently damaging, his game-day hairstyle is now more unpredictable than Parramatta's early-season form.Moimoi has sported dreadlocks, plaits, and even decorative yellow beads. But the real crowd-pleaser came last Sunday against Newcastle at Parramatta Stadium, when he risked a life ban from the front-rowers' union by packing into scrums with a hair extension. The inevitable tugs and taunts from rival forwards are no deterrent for Moimoi, who this week invited The Daily Telegraph along for his now-mandatory booking at Deep Salon on The Horsley Drive, Smithfield."I just couldn't find the time to cut my hair, so I let it grow a bit this year,'' he said. "I wanted something different to everyone else and the first thing I went with was corn rows."Last week I got the hair extensions, and my teammates are now getting to the game wondering what style I'll have each week.''His stylist Deejay is adamant Moimoi should go "white-blond ... it would really suit his skin colour''.Moimoi was non-committal about taking her advice for tomorrow night's home clash with New Zealand, but Eels CEO Paul Osborne hasn't hesitated in trying to cash-in on this hirsute marketing opportunity."I've been looking around this week and trying to get a couple of thousand wigs made for our final home game against Penrith [in round 25],'' Osborne said."The fans already love Fuifui, but this has taken his hero status to another level."If he keeps playing this well, he can do whatever he wants with his hair.''Eels coach Daniel Anderson would no doubt agree, singling Moimoi out for praise after last week's 40-8 thumping win over the Knights. Carrying a medial ligament tear into the game that ordinarily requires six weeks' rest, Moimoi played an unbroken 25 minutes to start the match before returning to score a crucial try after halftime.Quizzed about his ability to carry a serious knee injury, Moimoi replied: "The doctor said it's because of my big Tongan legs. They protect my knees better. I've also been using the same Painaway stuff Danny Green uses - that's helped as well.''

"More so a great performance could come from the motivation and not from skill. If they try to win with talent and skill ain't going far as there is not much without Moses. With heart and effort they could do ok, maybe not win but get close.
