This is what peeves me...

SCENE 1

The Naiqama try galled me on any number of levels. Neither marker Sio or Blair did their job. As you can see below there is only one man behind the ball. For Naiqama to get past the markers is bad enough but them for him to be able to cut between Smith and Kelly just defies belief. However, I'm going to single Sio out here, because if he is not shown this video while being belted around the head, something is very wrong.

SCENE 2

So, Sio has made the original missed tackle and when doing so he was facing the tryline, shortly after making it, he stumbles a little but if he had of motored at no stage would he have ever been more than 10 metres behind Naiqama. However, at this stage shown here, he's already given up the chase and he's simply half-heartedly jogging back. You'll notice Nathan Hindmarsh's shadow - he's out of picture but putting in the big-ones and is belting across from the middle of the park. That said Sio is still outpacing Kelly and Blair who hasn't even attempted to cover up.

SCENE 3

This is how close Hindmarsh got. Burt did enough to force Naiqama to get off balance and have to start running again. You'll not Sio is not even in the picture. Even Ryan Morgan has come across from the very far wing and got closer than all those around markers (and this is why I'll take Morgan every day of the week over any of our other outside backs). Sio is not even in shot. Now given that Sio should have been within ten of Naiqama, had he chased back in the same manner as Hindmarsh he should have easily have been able to cover up. Keep in mind, this in 10 minutes into the second half so fatigue should not be an issue.

Every week, Parramatta laments those "little lapses" that cost them these types of tries. This is just plain lack of effort and Kearney shouldn't stand for it. And those players responsible should be made to explain to Hindmarsh why they thought it was he that should do the chasing, after coming from a good 10m from behind those around marker.

  • There is nobody in the Parramatta side that comes close to Hindmarsh when it comes to determination and heart. I am really worried about how bad our defence will be when he retires.
  • I love it when Dr Phil gets the screen shots n the highlighter out, now were talking business  !!

As i said in your last blog Phil, i think alot of it comes down to 'state of mind' and being emotionally ready for whats going to happen in a game.

This is where i believe SK really needs a bit of help with, these lapses happen every week, apart from hindy, i dont think we are in the right headspace as a unit, we have only been competing for about 40 mins each week, sometimes even less, as i said you only have to look at the desire the dogs n sharks compete with every week for the full 80 mins to see that we have a problem in that dept.

  • I don't accept that as an excuse. Ryan Morgan is a rookie. You can never fault Morgan for effort.

Ben Smith's effort was crap too.

I'm very forgiving when a player is beat or does poorly for lack of skill. I can't stomach lack of effort.

I sit on the 10 metre mark there every home game. Every week I see the ball kicked down into that corner and every week I see sides effortlessly work the ball out. That galls me enough, but if you look at that first frame, there is clearly no way that Naiqama should have any chance of going through there. When you get the opposition pinned down in that area, the marker's eyes should be filled with fire with the desire to keep them pegged down there. We mozy off our line and this is the whole reason Kearney's attempt to change the style of play hasn't worked - because this shit isn't done right. Teams that are good at grinding you down, make you pay when you have to bring a ball out from this position. It's freaking killing me.

    Great work Phil.
  • Is that you Luke

  • Sio's whole game looked to be down a level or 2. Jogged the ball back on kick returns with little intent at busting the line or hitting a gap. He looks tired, and agree with Mutt, needs to either, have a week or 2 at Wenty, a week off, or just simply pull his finger out! Was really disappointed with his effort especially the Naiqama try, if he had made an effort straight away, he may have caught him.

  • Lapses happen in all games. The players are human and not robots. If there were no lapses in either side we would be left with a nil all scoreline. We had plenty of opportunities to score to make up for these lapses but don't have nothing in attack. This is a coaching problem.

But no, let's single sio out. He cost us the game. Are you Stephen Kearney?
    • Successful football sides are built on bleeding for your brothers. I haven't even talked about the defensive lapse here, I'm talking about the effort to chase back.

Here's the link to the video.

I've been a massive support of Sio's - and I think he's going to hold down that wing spot for a long-time to come but that doesn't mean that effort was acceptable or should be accepted. And as I said, it wasn't just Sio - basically you only had two players who actually chased back. You don't know what's going to happen when a player breaks away. He could have gapped them by 20m but if you've still got your fullback back there, you have to chase back. Let's say Burt pulls Naiqama down. Who was going to be there for the next ruck?

    • I am a Ken Sio lover, from the moment he debuted round 26 last year. He's big and blisteringly quick, contests the high balls well, works well under pressure and will develop into a brilliant player as he gets more experience. But I agree with this example, he should've chased, he is far quicker than Naiqama and would have caught him...
