Referees co-coach Stuart Raper answers your most frequently asked questions from Round 3.
Question: Why was Taniela Lasalo’s try for Parramatta against South Sydney ruled a double-movement?
We can understand why referee Matt Cecchin made the decision because when viewed live it looked as though the Eels player had promoted the ball.
Having said that, he probably should have sent the decision upstairs to the video referee and had he done so, on video evidence, the try would have been awarded.
The ball bounces, but the player never extended his arm, the ball stays in the same position the whole time.
When looking at the double-movement, one of the key indicators that we look at is if the arm extends and if the ball moves.
In this instance, momentum carries the player, the ball is not promoted, and the try should have been awarded.

With absolutely no mention of censure, demotion or retraining for a ref who is obviously incapable of correctly carrying out his duties.
Remind us of anything - Sorry Doggies we stuffed it but hey - games over now so you won't get a crack at the GF.
Games - Finals and even Grandfinals ARE being decided by bad refs.
Nothing has changed.
OOPS - yes it has - they got worse as time goes on.
Do I sound just a little cynical here?
Matt Cecchin should be banished to referee in the juniors!
Yes we were robbed! But its gone, its over, its dusted, lets move on, we have the CowGirls this weekend and I reckon we will prevail.
if it happened to Manly you would never hear the end of it, Halser and co would be screaming!
and busting doors!
I agree, the lack of a video ref was the REAL problem
About the "double movement" to the naked eyed - the on field ref made the correct call because it looked like a double movement all the way.........and nobody has ASKED, WHY did the player need to LIFT his elbow - this to me only suggests the player changed his mind half way through the elbow movement - which only made the ref's call IMPOSIBLE to adjudicate correctly on - without the use of video replay
Now doesn't that open up a can of worms - when to use replay and when NOT to....there is way to much grey area there - and with grey area you can only get MISTAKES - Video replay therefore MUST be used on EVERY TRY where there is even the snallest degree of doubt -
What a mess - I thought the call on the field was good - because I sure looked like a double movement to me - EVEN THOUGH it wasn't......and there was still 70 mins left on the clock !!!!!!
I said exactly that here http://www.1eyedeel.com/xn/detail/500401:Comment:345407 - but anyone if thinks the REFS cost us the game they are sadly mistaken - Casey Maguire loss hurt Parra more than the BAD Call amongst other things -
The double movement call - to the naked eye was the CORRECT call - our bloke DID lift his elbow up (but did not extend it). Just lifting the arm is a non-penalty situation, but when I watched the game live - I yelled at my TV - DOUBLE MOVEMENT due to the upraised elbow - Parra DID NOT deserve a penalty here, as we did NOT promote the footy - but because the elbow got raised, then momentum carried him forwared at great pace - it DID appear, at first glance to be the correct call
Most of your posts of late have been cynical or negative Colin, sometimes i have to double check to see if it is one of your posts,It would seem being an Eels fan has finally caught up with you and you can no longer see the light at the end of the tunnel.Be patient Colin things will improve in time, a cultural change takes time and the team has to learn patience just as we as fans need to. Finals footy is most likely beyond this team this season but as long as they show some improvement in the way they aproach each game i will be happy.
