Nice article on Lachlan Coinakis. Rumours were he was set to head off to Souths this year, instead extending til 2027. Ryley Smith has been good, i think personally overrated (Shoot me), but he has been good for us. But Coinakis adding competition would be nice and builds a sense of needing to be great every week. I believe Ryles is high on Coinakis, probably the reason behind us looking at Brailey, despite being in the backend of his career. More so waiting for Coinakis to be ready. He is 19, 20 next year i believe.

EA should be able to help as i my exposure to him is limited, though Aus Schoolboy selection and hopefully U19's NSW Selection as well. His next step is to make his way into Flegg. Jack Hudson is performing well, chance for Coinakis to impress and topple him. Hands is off-contract in 2026, Lussick this year, there is a path for Coinakis to be Hooker #3 in 2026. More likely receiving a development deal for 2026 and 2027. Then the ideal scenario would be Smith and Coinakis being out two Hookers in 2027.

        • Well he could stay for an extra year or two if Parra want him. He will be 32 at the end of his deal but he doesn't play big mins where the age will get to him.

Though Smith could play his role well too, Smith is a nice runner of the ball playing Lock for Penrith lower grades.

          • I would keep Walker for as long as he fis fit, a very astute signing!!

            • I think we could see what Ryles meant with the Gutho at 14 claims and how he would play. If that's was the plan all along. But Walker has been very good.

          • If Walker be 32 when he deal is done i hope we let him go fuck me dont want a 32 or 33 old player playing for you

  • Ok want to preface this quickly as the blog is about Coinakis mainly but has been about Smith.

When I say overrated, I mean right now, not what he will be in future. Some are claiming him to be the next Harry Grant or as I mentioned better than Mahoney in his first full year. I have not seen that yet. That's ok, but he is good and I like him just saying. My brother played at a high level of 20's and Ron Massey, played Hooker for Country and rep teams. He mentions himself he sees Smith as stick standard. High work rate not much else. I think he is better than that though. And can get better.

But also Coinakis could be better and there is a chance for him to challenge starting as soon as next year.
I understand if someone sort of has a fit if someone slightly knocks a player they love, hey I have too in the past. But I am not saying he is bad, far from it just I am not 100% ready to say he is our future right now, give him another season and see what Coinakis does and how the market is before that too.

    • I see your point man, Ryley has had one brain fart per game either with a shit kick or a horrific pass or both.

But I guess it's just our low standards slightly as we finally have a proper hooker who can play 60 min+ and make 40+ tackles.

      • Those brain fades can be a mixture of fatigue and desperation. But decision making will get there, hopefully.

  • R smith has been very good since he's come to first grade, he does all the little things well, I don't think he's quiet at reeds level yet, but he's not far off it, give him another preseason and he will go to another level, I still don't think he's an 80 min hooker just yet, at this stage he's about a 60 min hooker, you don't want to burn him out to quick, so another utility like a Joash Papali would be handy coming off the bench and giving him a spell. Hands named on the bench in cup, tells me he's not performing well
