Form and Frustration

Newcastle’s struggles at home continue, with just one win at McDonald Jones Stadium this year from four games — a Round 2 victory.  Since then, they've dropped six of their last seven games. Despite boasting the fourth-best defence, the Knights’ attack is the worst in the competition.

The Eels, meanwhile, have won only two of their past seven to sit last. The Eels have made more errors than the opposition in every game bar three - and won two of those.

In most games, they’ve shown effort and been in the fight despite lacking punch in the pack at times. But have been undone by poor ball control, errors and poor execution — leading coach Jason Ryles to reflect: "An old bloke once told me, the scoreboard is the last thing that changes.”

Last week's losses for both teams at home reflected those season-long themes.

Last Week: Recap

Jordan posted some decent stats for the Eels last week. What will be his future position?

Against the composed Dolphins at Commbank, the Eels were in the fight once again, but poor ball control (77%-89% completions and 10-6 errors) and bombed tries meant the Eels couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities and good possession (52%-48%). The Dolphins executed better, won some crucial moments, and had the class to pull through 20-16.

Against the struggling Titans at MacDonalds Jones, the Knights couldn’t score a point in the second half. Despite a promising half-time lead of 20-6 they got overrun by the Titans to go down 24-20.

Dane Gagai will make his 300th NRL appearance.

Bottom Line

Despite their ladder positions, only two wins separate the last-placed Eels from the sixth-placed Cowboys and eigth-placed Silvertails. The margin between success and failure in this topsy-turvy season has been razor-thin. A win for Newcastle could re-spark belief and honour a club legend. For the Eels, MOMAX might be the circuit-breaker they’ve been waiting for. Losing has become a habit for them since mid-2023. A win would give them hope of avoiding a spoon and building something for next year and beyond.

  • I think HFK said it. But Matto was average. For a bloke posting on instagram and being shopped around he looked shit. Was very slow in attack and offered jack shit impact off the bench. Mataele looked nervous in attack. I recon we will see Doorey or Guymer or both back onto the bench. Could tell we struggled without Moretti on the bench.

    • He was. His running was bang average. Unlike Mataele where his runs weren't amazing but the effort was there and he will get better as his body gets used to FG. But Matto just was a number. Though to be fair i don't mind him staying on the bench playing 15-20mins. Defensively he is fine.

Although why not start Samrani and have Moretti go back to the bench? I think he has shown he can handle the edge.

      • It's hard to move Williams from the edge after a MoM performance. Yep Mataele will improve for sure. I would move Moretti back in the bench and start someone else in the middle

    • i'd play mataele for another 2 games to get him some FG experience and get him back in cup

  • A very boring game to watch. If it wasn't against the Knights Eels wouldn't have won. Penisini needs to be dropped. Hop good and Russell are very average.

    • It's tough being an eels fan so enjoy the wins when they come, otherwise what's the point in being a fan if all you get is misery.  Not saying accept mediocre but find some joy in a win.

  • A good win, not a great win but good. We captialised with a man up like we should have but could tell Ryles was not pleased and that's good, his expectations are going up. Yeah it was Newcastle but have to beat what is in front of you. All i'll say is BA is odds on to be Newcastle coach in 2026.

Good on Toni Mataele #862. Hopefully Joash Papali'i is next debutant.

  • @EA, is mataele a front rower or edge coming through the grades?.

    • Edge coming through the grades. But injuries and poor defence meant he moved to the middle and has killled it in cup since moving there.

      • I thought he was edge coming through and looks a little lean for middle at this stage in his development but plenty of growth still to come.
