On-going contract negotiations, including a tilt at Storm superstar Greg Inglis, as well as tension with the coaching staff appears to be causing drama within the Eels camp.
I now have multiple unrelated sources who have indicated that the Eels are negotiating with Inglis. The Eels are far from the only club chasing him but we’re definitely in the race.
Of course, Inglis won’t come cheap and will require further pruning of the Eel’s roster. One player looking unlikely to be in the side next year is Eric Grothe. My understanding, based on a trusted source is that Grothe has been offered a contract far below his current deal and the big winger is thoroughly unimpressed.
Further drama transpired prior to the game last week, according to one source, with a disagreement taking place between Grothe and the coaching staff. While the Eels are claiming Grothe had a neck injury, it was noticeable that he did not appear to be at the game sitting with other injured teammates. UPDATE: I note Bosanac has information too that Grothe is on his way out, too.
At this stage, the club seems to looking to make room for a major signing and they want Inglis. It also appears they’re holding off any making any further signings until they know Inglis’ intentions.
Kris Keating has indicated in the media that he felt a deal was close to being signed a month ago, and this situation was confirmed by one of my sources. However, no deal has yet been signed as talk of an Inglis deal has intensified.
There is also continuing chatter about Daniel Anderson’s position at the club. Considering he took the club to a grand final in his first year, and his side is still in the eight despite having an up and down season, it’s hard to fathom his position could be under threat. While there has been talk about Ricky Stuart, the coach that I have heard being linked to the Eels is Nathan Brown. A media report earlier in the year linked Brown with the Eels and Souths, and I’ve been told that the club has made enquiries about Brown’s future.
I can’t corroborate any of the above, except to say I trust my sources and they have been on the money with everything I have passed on this year. The Eel’s hardly played like they were a happy cohesive unit on Friday and as the club is forced to deal with a lot of player management issues, the people skills of the coach and administration are going to be tested. We will never have a better opportunity to win a Premiership than we will in 2010 but the ship is going to need to stay upright for that to happen.

We need to sign a HOOKER - no. 1 priority. We have been out of sorts in that position since Ridell and PJ Marsh left.
Obviously Inglis is fantastic, but I think we are pretty well placed in the outside backs. Even if Grothe goes we have Hayne, Burt, Reddy, Tahu, Humble etc. Unless they want him to play 5/8? In which case, all the KK fans better start taking notice.
Problem with Inglis is that he's a fullback playing in tne centres. Get him in a team at 1 and he would shine above Slater and Hayne IMO.
Hayne needs to play fullback, its where he seems most comfortable.
