I think you may find that had a lot to do with the man himself Phil.
He VERY publicly stated on several occassions that if he could not get a decent wage out of RL he would walk.
Guys got to be able to pay the rent and eat.
It's a familiar story really. The naturally gifted and supremely talented players rarely make good coaches. It's hard to think of the last great player who also was a great coach. And I mean long-term coach, not a 1 or 2 season flash in the pan a la Fittler. Bob Fulton may be the most recent. If you take club coaching out of it, Meninga has 5 Origin series wins in a row, but it's been acknowledged that his offsiders in camp have done most of the technical input. And who couldn't coach that QLD crop of players to a win?!
