With rumours circulating of the Eels moving in on Matt Scott, it begs the question where should Parramatta be spending their money?
Prop has always been a contentious position in this regard, and Wayne Bennett's thoughts on not over-spending on the engine room are well documented. Others say that success starts with the ability for your team to go forward.
Of course, your spending also needs to be driven by where there are holes in your roster, not to mention the style of play you're looking to adopt. So how does Matt Scott fit the bill?
Firstly, I won't say no to any of the games elite players. Matt Scott is one of, if not the best prop in the game. Parramatta's struggled to recruit players at that level for a number of years, so his signing would be welcome on that front alone.
However, no doubt it will cost plenty to bring Scott to the club, which could jeopardise our ability to make key signings in areas where I think we are even weaker. I still think we are always going to struggle until we have what I like to call a FFF (trademark pending) - frightening fringe forward. I see the FFF as the player who makes the most space for you backline and I think not having a player of that description for the past number of years has crippled us for the last couple of years.
We have to remember that Hopoate is a marquee signing we'll be bringing on board next year and if you add Hayne and Sandow, Scott's arrival will mean we have four marquee-priced signings on the books. Clubs generally struggle to fit anymore than that in under the cap.
For me, the signing of Scott is relative to our ability to also bring on a FFF. If we can uncover a bargain on that front, Scott is a great signing. However, I am concerned there are more pressing areas of our roster that need reinforcement.
