Not sure if anybody saw the story on the weekend about The Star pulling the pin on their sponsorship of South Sydney.
FORMER rugby union boss John O'Neill and his The Star casino have pulled the pin on a $2 million sponsorship of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
A Star spokesperson confirmed on Friday their deal would not be renewed in a decision that is understood to have reached board level.
As we all know, Parramatta is currently look for a major sponsor. Over the past couple of months, whenever I've expressed reservations that Parramatta might struggle to get the $1.5 million it is seeking, you hear people say 'But Souths get $1.5 million for their jersey' so we should too.
However, the sponsorship market is tough right now. Parramatta's lowly position on the table means that free-to-air television coverage would be well down. When you have an organisation like The Star baulking at an equivalent sponsorship to what Parramatta is asking, it's not a good sign at all.

Your glass is half empty Phil.
Maybe Star thinks their logo will look better with a blue & GOLD background.
Sorry, Unicorn milk takes a while to leave the system.
Star was only the home jersey sponsor wasn't it?
Yep, the data I've seen of sponsorship arrangement had Star and DeLonghi sharing the two jerseys for a total of 1.5 for the year, which puts Souths as the highest earners in the NRL. (I've heard suggestions Broncos are higher but they have a more far-reaching sponsorship).
Souths have 10,000 more members than we do, if we want to get more sponsorship $$$ we need to get more members, win more games and play at a bigger stadium.
It's probably been long enough for people to forget, so why not sneak back a sponsor from the past.
The Parra 'Winnie Blue' & Golds.
"I'm just ducky down to the stadium for some Winnie Blue (& Gold)
I see your point but at end of day that Duncan clown needed to be as far away from this club as possible at what ever the cost was, so no regrets as far as I'm concerned.
Seriously, what do you base that on? No one had a single bad word to say against Duncan, until he quit the board because he wasn't willing to risk his reputation, based on what he was seeing going on. Then suddenly, certain journalists familiar to all Parramatta fans started writing stories about him putting pressure on the club, etc.
I can tell you that when I was suspended, I got in contact with Glenn and he approached Ken Edwards for me and we set up a meeting to try and get the thing resolved. I've found him to be incredibly generous and nothing but helpful every single interaction I've had with him.
Yeah that's good money if you can get it.
Wouldnt surprise me if John O'Neill had something to do with it. Maybe you will see The Star sponsor the Waratahs next year if HSBC 's contract is up.
