Seems that the indigenous people of Australia ( A particular Tribe) are looking to claim a large proportion of Melbourne as native title so they can make sure the region is looked after correctly. The Waterways, native lands etc..Is this ok and do you think that it affect people that live there or businesses as such. I'm ok for areas of Australia being looked after but not sure if this will help or not.  An excerpt from the News Article:

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people in Victoria have filed a native title claim with the Federal Court, seeking recognition over country that spans much of Melbourne.

Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung elder Perry Wandin said the claim was part of an intergenerational pursuit for his people's connection to their land to be recognised.

"Wurundjeri people have fought for decades for recognition and respect and have been at the forefront of protecting culture and country in Melbourne and surrounds," Elder Perry Wandin said.

"We want the waterways, the land to be looked after."

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung claim area covers most of metropolitan Melbourne, beyond the Great Dividing Range, west to the Werribee River, east to Mount Baw Baw, and south to Mordialloc Creek.

      • No not at first Speech , but under the land titles act 2000 in the NT it allows native title holders to convert their land to a freehold title.

In Qld from the 1st of January 2015 new rules allow Aboriginal and Torres straight islanders the opportunity to convert communal land into freehold.

Indigenous land use agreements (ILUAs) where native title groups work with governments and potential land users about the use of lands and water (futures act)under the  native title act 1993.

Which grants licences and permits for mining groups to operate  amongst other things on land which would otherwise be off limits.

This conveniently allows governments to deflect criticism and scrutiny ,if the public are outraged for eg over the  forrests  being desecrated so windmills and solar panels can be built becoming an eyesore across the nation the government remains at arms length .

Not a lot of politicians or members of the media are willing to to take indigenous councils to task , take a look at the current situation around financial reporting of tax payer funds.

All Australians should have agency over state and national forrests, waters ,natural landmarks and their usage.

Before anyone labels me racist my grandmother is indigenous, I identify as Australian.

        • Aboriginals bear no responsimility for Australias deforestation issues. We do just fine without their help...I mean, Tasmanian forestry is some of the worst offenders and we didn't leave anyone there alive who could Native Title anything

  • Culture war bullshit to distract us from the multinationals stealing our gas reserves. Wake up.

  • Yawn.

It's not going to change my life one little bit.

If the court decides for them then they were correct in their claim, if not they weren't.

    Yawn

  • The lead applicant and proud Wurundjeri man Darcy Cohen - Hunter. Apparently works for Slater and Gordon as an exclusive Abuse law clerk. Completing an associate Degree in Legal Practice.

The law will decide,   I guess if he / they / them whatever is correct wording are successful or not. Interesting times. I still have one of the original cloth patch Eels logo when our emblem was an indigenous man with a spear.

    • Trouble making cockhead

    • My sons Parramatta Jnr Eels has the same guy. I think he is hunting eels.

Having this cracker as Lead Applicant seems a strange PR choice for the Wurundjeri

    • lol, it's like a skit ....

  • It's a tough old subject this one as I'm native Māori here in NZ and the hoops we have to jump through to get things done or land back that was stolen or even usage or having a say in how it's being treated and used is let's just say hard at best.

You'd like to think that there would be a fair solution to these soughts of issues but in mst cases there just aren't and finding them feels like an act of futility for hich ever side of the fence your on.
