Seems that the indigenous people of Australia ( A particular Tribe) are looking to claim a large proportion of Melbourne as native title so they can make sure the region is looked after correctly. The Waterways, native lands etc..Is this ok and do you think that it affect people that live there or businesses as such. I'm ok for areas of Australia being looked after but not sure if this will help or not.  An excerpt from the News Article:

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people in Victoria have filed a native title claim with the Federal Court, seeking recognition over country that spans much of Melbourne.

Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung elder Perry Wandin said the claim was part of an intergenerational pursuit for his people's connection to their land to be recognised.

"Wurundjeri people have fought for decades for recognition and respect and have been at the forefront of protecting culture and country in Melbourne and surrounds," Elder Perry Wandin said.

"We want the waterways, the land to be looked after."

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung claim area covers most of metropolitan Melbourne, beyond the Great Dividing Range, west to the Werribee River, east to Mount Baw Baw, and south to Mordialloc Creek.

  • It's a tough old subject this one as I'm native Māori here in NZ and the hoops we have to jump through to get things done or land back that was stolen or even usage or having a say in how it's being treated and used is let's just say hard at best.

You'd like to think that there would be a fair solution to these soughts of issues but in mst cases there just aren't and finding them feels like an act of futility for hich ever side of the fence your on.

  • Victorians deserve everything they get.  I hope this results in them getting reamed.  That way it can be an example for the rest of Australia what happens when you vote Extreme left  Labor Greens.

  • The way I look at it, every country on earth has been conquered by another civilization at some point with natives displaced, or worse, killed off.

It's happened throughout human history for millenia. It's fair to say that without exploration, wars and settlement, we wouldn't have the technology, the industry and life much of the world enjoys today.

Even the aboriginals themselves would have to concede (although they never will) that they have benefited from the white man's settlement, but yet the ones born 230 years later cry foul, whilst enjoying the comforts that's been inherited from the settlers they complain about. Most are whiter than me FFS.

Maybe we should all fuck off, take all the technology, agriculture, education etc with us and let them live as they were 230 years ago. But nope, they wouldn't want that, would they - just the money thanks.

You can't change history and no amount of money, or apologies, or titles will ever change that and that's what they need to accept. We are all Australians, no matter what they say.

    • I've heard this argument before with the positives you mention there are plenty of negatives for the mentioned also you could well say you could leave with them also.I don't know indigenous people were probably living quite happily before anyone else came it's hard to say they weren't happy without the mentioned.

Its just looking at it through a different set of eyes is all.

As an example here in NZ Maori weren't allowed to speak there own language and used to get hit in schools for doing so.I mean imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and you got punished for speaking English your native tongue. My grandfather who was the last generation in our family to speak our own language and it's only now being revitalised in my daughters generation. There's many other examples of this sought of negativity when in all, it was never necessary and better solutions could have been found but weren't.

I get the argument when your not the ones being persecuted of course you don't want change and want people who are clearly are different to fall into line.Maori here in NZ have experienced much of the samething.

      • I get the argument when your not the ones being persecuted of course you don't want change...

        This.This. Thiis

      • Nobody's being persecuted in 2025. Indigenous people have the benefit of full citizenship now. If they are (on average) disadvantaged, it's for the same reason any Australians are disadvantaged; because they were born into poverty. But in that case it's a class issue, not a race issue.

        • My great-grandmother died in 1990 aged 95. Born 1885. She only missed colonization by one lifetime and a bit. Aboriginals were heavily repressesed and slaughtered. Specifically prevented from voting till 1965. Languages suppressed, children removed.

That is persecution, and not long ago. The effects of persecutionon on whole populations linger for many generations. This is known

We are offering reparations for persecution. Seems fair to me

          • In that case, anyone from a low socioeconomic background is suffering the lingering effects of persecution. Focusing on the rights of minority populations is a distraction from dealing with class based injustice. Which is exactly why elites are all in support of this sort of thing.

            • I don't mean to be rude Pou, but that whole comment is hot garbage..anyone from a low socioeconomic background is not suffering the effects of persecution on a whole population. In Australia, only Aboriginals have claim to that

We can walk and chew gum at the same time
