The prat Darius Boyd

Now here's a bloke who desperately needs to pop some Viagra eyedrops and taking a long, hard look at himself. The St George club sent this bloke out to face the media to assist in the promotion of the big game between the Saints and the Broncos - after all, it's round 2 of Wayne Bennett against his former charges and will provide a fascinating highlight in a blockbuster round. The NRL can do with all the favourable publicity it can get and Darius was the obvious candidate. He was a Bronco under Wayne and is now a Dragon under Wayne. He can also speak reasonably well. So, what does this miserable little cur come up with?? Cynical, monosyllabic grunts to the media's questions. What a piece of shit Darius is!! Under siege from rival codes and drowning in a cesspool of player misbehaviour, violence towards women, group sex scandals, innappropriate conduct by administrators, drug use and, in one case, the apparent unawareness of the invention of the toilet, the NRL's image has taken a massive hit over the course of the last few seasons in particular. Every opportunity to positively promote the game should be, and often is, gleefully taken. The players, for the most part, recognise this obligation and do their best with community service and charity work during their time off. All Darius had to do was answer some questions for 5 minutes. He couldn't or wouldn't do it!Now, the NRL went to great lengths to stress that Brett Stewart was suspended for 4 weeks at the beginning of the season - not for the pending charges for alleged sexual assault - but for being intoxicated in a public place and thus bringing the game into disrepute. Nate Myles was rightfully flushed out of the game for 8 weeks for 'snapping one off' in a hotel corridor. Players who've been caught drink driving have received club imposed suspensions this season, and deservedly so.However, all these above incidents occurred in the players' own time - when they were 'off-duty' so to speak. Darius Boyd, however, was at training when 'interviewed' by the media and so was on 'company time' so to speak. This, in my opinion, makes his actions all the more objectionable. If we were to fail so abjectly, so deliberately in our respective workplaces, we'd no doubt expect negative repercussions. Now, bear in mind, I'm not trying to draw parallels with Boyd's actions (or inactions) and the actions of Nate Myles or the alleged deeds of Brett Stewart, Greg Inglis, etc; nor am I trying to quantify the degree of wrong, however, the NRL have shown their hand by suspending players who bring the game into disrepute and Darius Boyd has UNDOUBTEDLY done so.If David Gallop and his administration are serious, they need to make an example of Boyd and suspend him for at least one match. If not, the NRL will this time have given itself a black-eye.

  • This really P*ssed me off aswell. I know the media have given the Dragon's a bit of a bashing in the last few weeks, but really who gives a toss?

At one time or another every team is the medias whipping boy, just ask the sharks, roosters and manly from this year alone. Comparitively the Dragon's have copped a mosquito bite, and regardless they should expect a bit of trash talk in the media, they are leading the comp and rightfully so, however the media aren't stupid, they know that your typical Aussie goes for the underdog which is why they have been on The Parra/Tigers bandwagon over the last few weeks, and are introducing stories of how the dragons think they already have it won/are crumbling under expectations etc.

Look if Boyd really didn't want to do the interview he should of handed the duties to somebody else who would of atleast given more than sarcastic 2 word answers. The funny thing is if the Dragons had any dignity they should of ignored the "name calling" and continued to go along with their business of trying to win the comp, im sure that would have earned them more respect from the fans and now with this embarassing interview theyve just turned alot more of the everyday punters on to the underdog's bandwagon. All the better for us :)
  • That was very very ordinary. At the very least, both Boyd and the club should be fined.

But what can we expect really, Bennett hasn't ever been very media friendly. When your "mentor" is that way...........
  • Not disagreeing but my god, the questions were awful. If one of my journalists came back after having spent an hour on the road and said they couldn't get anything out of an interview and then showed me those questions, I'd sit them in the corner and make them read their journalism 101 text book front to back again.

Of the seven questions, only two were open-ended questions and one asked about the side's strategy for the weekend, which you could hardly expect him to answer. I generally grimace each week when I hear the questions asked to the parra players but those were genuinely awful. He's a young bloke who would have had very little media training and you'd want to offer him up some open-ended, leading questions...
  • Isn't he one of the guys caught up in the Broncos s.x scandal last year? Him, Sammy T and Karmichael.

Maybe he is giving it to the media because he didn't like how he was portrayed.

    GO THE EELS!
    • That may well be the case, but I would have thought that his manager/coach/mentor might have suggested to him that acting like a spoilt child isn't the way to win the hearts and minds of the public at large. This episode has only confirmed his negative image.
  • what a knob jockey
  • He typified the arrogance that his club has developed of late. How embarassing for him, his club and their fans.
  • I heard that the dragons boys have a bit of a comp to see who can do the shortest interview or be the most non-responsive. I think that this might have been compounded by the fact Bennett ask the players to be conservative with what they discussed with the media. i'm not sticking up for Boyd, what he did was pretty ordinary given that the media essentially facilitate him earning his income, but I think there may have been a couple of contributing/mitigating factors to his responses.
  • i thought it was pretty funny.
    • I still think he is a knob!
