Storm confirm Lowrie signing

Todd Lowrie has signed a two year deal with the Storm, the club announced today. Lowrie is one of three signings, the Premiers announced today, the other being former Newcastle and Souths winger Luke MacDougall as well as Bulldogs forward John Kite. "I’m thrilled at being able to join such a successful club, particularly given the way the Eels ended last season,” Lowrie was quoted as saying. “It’s a new beginning for me and I’m excited about the challenge that lies ahead.” Storm coach Craig Bellamy said that: "we’re confident these players can make a positive impact here in Melbourne next year". “Todd and Luke are both accomplished NRL players while John is a big body with huge upside. We’re very comfortable with where we’re at with regards to our squad for next year.”

    • agree cant wait to see the poore and moi moi combination its gonna be deadly
  • Call me crazy

I would have let Cayless go and kept Lowrie

Lowrie has plenty of miles left in the tank and his form at the back end of 2009 was awesome - he will be missed

This is not an anti Cayless rant - I just think there is better value in the long term for a Lowrie (who seems just a bit special IMHO). Lowrie has a toughness and balls skills and a massive motor.....and sadly Cayless's best days are behind him and takes up way too much salary cap space for mine

    Don't hate me !!!
  • we all know when todd lowrie isnt having a good day he is absolutely rubbish.

he started playing good when we started playing good and the team morale was very high. He may be a really bad signing for Melbourne (fingers crossed) or he could fill the void of Dallas johnson and then some.

you can be a fan of "the todd", but there's no denying that he doesnt have the potential that our other 2nd rowers have. I have to disagree on cayless leaving instead of him. Captain cayless was great for us towards the end of the year. His offloads were were great and he was very mobile in his runs creating platforms for the likes of fuifui, thats why i think poore will compliment our team well next year
  • I would like to hope that most people on this forum know my feelings about The Wonderful Todd, but for me in deciding who I would prefer to have in my team, it is a no-brainer. Our Courageous Captain is such an important role model for our younger players and is a true Parramatta man.

While I am really say to see the Todd go because he did improve so dramatically in the last couple of months, he is gone and that's all that needs to be said.

Onto next year and bigger and brighter things!
  • Players should be valued on more than just their playing ability. The contribution Nathan Cayless makes to our team cannot just be based on his playing ability (of which he has plenty). As our Captain, he is a leader and a role model. Just because he is nearing the end of his career and lessening in value, that our club should be any less committed to them.

What if we were discussing Nathan Hindmarsh? I would argue that NO MATTER WHAT happens in respect of Hindy's playing ability in the next few years, that he has earned the right to remain at our club till the very end.

P.S. Just because I highlighted in my post that Caylo is a role model and important for our young players, does not mean that I advocated keeping him for just sentimental reasons. I was simply suggesting his value cannot be measured just by analysing his playing ability.
  • Ok, so Cayless may not be in as good form as what he was some years back but he is still playing well enough to hold his own. And it should also be taken into account that he does also inspire others. I remember an interview that Hindmarsh had a couple of years ago and the reporter asked him how does he keep going all day. His response was that when he looks over and sees his captain (yes, Cayless) busting his ass off it makes him get in and do more work too. That has to be worth something. I say a good captain is worth their weight in gold in that they inspire others to be better players and the effect of this should not be underestimated.
  • John Hill, let's have a bit of context here. Half way through the season Lowrie had contributed very little. Maybe a hand full of useful games over 3 years. He struggled to make first grade for about half his time at the club. In the last half of the season he showed great spirit and potential but it was too little too late. Anderson certainly had faith in his 'closing down' ability in the last 20 minutes of a game and he became an important part of the team.

You have to trust the coach though. He obviously had his reasons for allowing Lowrie to go and choosing to keep others on the payroll. Maybe his hand was somewhat forced on account of our big 3 2010 recruits but if you really want somebody in your team you go to all lengths to ensure they stay.

Comparing him to Cayless......................... well, I guess that's the kind of thing we do on this site. It's a bit of a futile argument though considering one is a back rower and one is a prop. If Cayless was released to make room for Lowrie would that mean Lowrie would have to play prop? I think it would mean that our front row stocks would be reduced and we'd have yet another capable back rower trying to make it into the first grade team.
  • I guess you are just lucky that I am not running the club!

We are going to have to agree to disagree. I still maintain that a players value cannot be determined simply by the way he plays, though of course that should be the most important criterion. NRL is a team sport which takes far more than just ability - it takes courage, motivation and spirit. Further, if form and ability is the most and the only important thing, then surely the Captain should be the most talented player on the team. As much as I love Cayless, it's not him. The fact that he is Captain illustrates that he is valued for more than just his playing potential.
  • That's not what you said before! You plainly said that form MUST be the only criterion on which to judge a player's value. Clearly, you've realised the stupidity of your own argument and have subsequently watered it down into taking 'the club needs to be tough" stance.

    Two distinctly different comments!
  • I understand everything you have commented on in regards to the Captain and agree 1 billion%!!!

I am not going to even utter his name cause it creates way too much chaos!!!
