The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce Jake Arthur, Makahesi Makatoa and Sean Russell have all signed contract extensions until the end of 2023.

Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neil said, “Since arriving at the Eels, Makahesi has impressed us with his great attitude and toughness, but it was his determination and incredible resilience which earned him his NRL debut and made him become an important member of our NRL squad.

“Both Jake and Sean have come through our junior pathways system and earned their top 30 positions. Jake is one of our most committed players, earning himself a debut this year in one of the most difficult positions. Sean was equally impressive in his debut performance on the wing, both players have an exciting future ahead of them.

“We’re incredibly proud of all three players, not just for their hard work and dedication, but also their wonderful character off the field.”

  • Jake is a decent back up for Moses or Brown, although I was critical of BA for persisting with him I felt he played to many games and was getting exposed defensively - physically he will get stronger, there's a footballer in Jake and a steady kicking game nice foil for either Brown or Moses

    • He was better in the back half than the knockers will ever give him credit for.

      • agree, there is upside to JA having a coach as a father wouldn't be easy but its been done before

  • Makatoa deserves an extension he played well in the end of season games

  • As meatloaf once sang, don't be sad.. 2 out of 3 ain't bad

    • Lol

    • Well said. I'm happy to keep two of these players.

  • It's great to see the continued investment in juniors and all the work with the pathways starting to pay off. We don't need them all to be superstars.

  • Dont mind these signings with an eye to the future and depth, and with another pre season under their belt and extra year of physical development they should be lot better.  The fact they trained with main squad and have played a bit of NRL last year is a bonus as many younger players and even older players making push for NRL debut, have missed out on a year or 2 of development with lack of game time and even lack of training due to Covid.

I expect if given game time early in the season these players may attract attention from other clubs looking for depth in positions or possibly even early transfer to fill in for high injury or Covid relayed player shortages.

With Covid still playing havoc with sport around the world I think holding juniors who have knowledge of game structures will be very important over the next season or 2 to minimise disruptions when players are out and lack of new juniors ready to step up to NRL level due to lack of game time.

  • Onward and upward.

"I wonder if we keep it respectful as a sense of pride? Or do they give up again in second half. A respectful loss should definately keep BA on hot seat but doubt it will that much."

"Thanks HOE. Outstanding work as always. Appreciate the work you put in.  A mate asked me if I'd go with him to Brookie to watch this game (he's a Manly fan). I said as much as I'd enjoy his company I'd rather use a grater on my nuts and dip them in…"
