100%. I think with the finish to the year last year. In particular the 60 pt thrashing of Newcastle. Plastered over the gaping holes in our roster. The winning preseason was a sugar rush which gave everyone the warm and fuzzier. Unfortunately the players we have bought this weren't the correct selections. The barometer for me will be the newy game.
Quick fix. Cmon we've been a below average side since 2001.

That is not passing the buck on the ref.
He gets peppered with officiating questions every week, except this week, and inconsistency's a very topical discussion that almost all coaches have spoken about.
Not sure about you folks, but 25 penalties/restarts in a game is a bit ridiculous.
In the Warriors game there were 85 sets as best I can tell, so 25 restarts (where you add 6-agains and penalties) meant every third set was restarted in some way?

Bennett, Cleary, Stuart, Robinson, Bellamy, Flanno and Benji have all directly spoken of the isssues and inconsistency with officiating.
Ryles has said nothing near that and he's passing the buck on refs?
P.S. The "horn effect" is when one negative trait (e.g. losing) makes you assume other things are negative too, and apparantly it tends to work hand-in-hand with cognitive dissonance.
It's just leadership shadow stuff - Ryles will learn with time. It's annoying, but as a leader everyone listens to every single word. There's no such thing as an "offhand comment" anymore. It'll all be analysed and used.
Irritating, kinda silly, but a well known and well studied situation that basically all leaders (and definitely all publicly facing ones) have to navigate.
The reality is 80% of the words we all say are just stream of consciousness stuff, but when all your words are over analysed you learn to be much more mindful of any words that come out of your mouth. Gus is a great example, he's very good at his craft, every word he says is said for a reason... sometimes we realise that reason in retrospect.
Ryles is still a new head coach, he's going to be learning a million things week in week out at the moment. We have to give him the latitude to learn. If he has his moment again he probably wouldn't have made that throwaway comment in the same way.

It will be interesting to see if the media press him on it this week. And I wonder if he'll 'sigh' or have a 'chesire cat' smile about it.
I too often find myself analyzing words and 'body language' — mainly because people are fascinating. You have to set 'baselines' before you make any kind of subjective opinion.
I don't think his remarks this week necessarily a sign of "breaking point" or "passing the buck" or whatever some have assumed picking up on small details. Head coaches are under constant stress, unless you're Keiran Foran, lol. That's a normal baseline. Losing is stressful. For everyone.
Firstly, I've noticed Ryles occasionally throws a loaded grenade but doesn't often go into too much detail; preferrably to let it land with some space around it.
I remember last year, when we had a few rough ends of the stick with officiating, Ryles said something like he doesn't make enough money to comment on that or words to that effect; with a smile. That was a far more direct than the 'no questions on officiating' quipp.
Secondly, that wedding ring soothing action someone brought up as evidence of stress. Nah. Not really. He actually does use that when we win as well. It's not really a huge tell-tale sign. He does use it a bit more after a loss though. It's probably more a sign he's thinking more. A loss and pain would cause that. It's normal.
He has a few other 'soothing' actions that he uses a lot. The folded arms. The self-hug are others. The self-hand shake. Different people will use different ones. It's no biggie. It's when they stop that, you've got to wonder why... and that could be just deliberate self-editing.
Thirdly, that comment on recruitment space being tough, last week, is actually no biggie. Gus goes on about this basically every week. Matt Camerson admits R&R pisses him off. We're making mountains out of mouldhills. But I get why. The "bull horn".
In that Johns brothers interview he did last year, he did admit that some of the biggest lessons he's learned as a "head coach" is that everyone hangs off every word and how much work goes into R&R.
So, he already is aware of all this and all the traps — a long time ago.
I think not only was Ryles having a shot at the officiating but also at the media also
