Ryles pressor

He wasn't happy, and his last comment as he was getting up, no questions on the officiating?....

Interesting lol

                • Gus has been saying for some time recruitment is the most challenging as he’s ever seen. Even over the last week.

What Ryles said, which aligns with that, is just grounded in reality.

                  • Gus also said Parramatta were crazy to let Gutherson go.  How did that turn out

                    • Gus knows more about R&R than any of us, no?

But imo Ryles made the right call to let Gutho go. For all parties.

Let's agree to disagree on all of that.

                    • I know that,  but he'll also produce information to suit himself and the club he works for. 50% of his talk is skewed towards making other teams weaker,  and the dogs stronger

                    • There is some truth there, Chiefy. Still, it doesn't prove he's lying. Matt Cameron has also admitted the same. Is he lying too? Ryles, Cameron, Gus et al — all saying the same thing about R&R being challenging. Realism. Ask any coach or administrator. I doubt they'll disagree.

                  • Hey HOE,

No doubt recruitment is very challenging, no denying it, but in 2026 we finished 17th in that challenging race, should that not demand some questions / answers internally?

I respect your loyalty to those at the helm, HOE, I honestly wish I had some similar faith, but no matter how challenging something is, it's going to become a hell of a lot harder if you lack foresight & rely on reactionary responses.

We agree on what our 'reality' is, but we'll have to agree to disagree on how that has become our reality, respectfully of course.

HOE, gennuine question, what would our 2027 recruitment need to look like for you to continue your confidence that we are on the right path? Any particular players / positions?

                    Su'a is a great start.

                    • NOS,

The constant, 24/7 criticism – same thing said a million different ways – is better said here than at home.

But we don’t all have to join the chorus and become an echo chamber.

I’m taking a longer term view.

Daz has already pointed out the contradictions in a lot of the criticism around overs, POs, and so on, so I won’t rehash that.

It’s good some are starting to see it.

Let’s look at recruitment and retention without emotion.

                      • Losing Brown and Lomax hurts, no question. But the reasons are clear. Both looked for the highest bidders. We offered around $1M for Brown, likely with TPAs. That’s fair. Paying around $1.3M over 10 years, with ratchet clauses to make him the highest paid player in the game, is way overs. At least until PNG tax free money comes into play shifts the market with players like Luai.
                      • Kaeon is around $1.2M on the cap plus extras. Neither we nor Souths were willing to go there. Good player, but too much on the cap. We didn't lose because of TPAs.
                      • Galvin chose the Dogs because he believes they are in a premiership window. That’s not about us being outbid or outplayed.
                      • Barnett’s situation was personal. His wife’s family is in Brisbane. That is his closest support network. Parra was not the right fit on that front. From what I have heard, he had been looking to leave the Warriors for some time, well before it played out.

In the last 18 months under Ryles, we have recruited Su’a, Iongi, Walker, Williams, The Fox, and Tallyn Da Silva. There is some genuine talent there.

Injuries have also played a part. Look at the Storm. Tigers yesterday. A few injuries and new combinations, errors, and they lose 52-10. We've used 28 players and have 27 in our squad when you consider Matto is MIA.

Sure not everything has worked. Pezet has not kicked on. But Kelly and JDB have not been as poor as some suggest. You still need players like that in a squad who do a job without costing a premium.

There is development coming through as well. Sam Tuivati, Ryles Smith, T Brown, Lorenzo, and a strong group of juniors not too far away.

Yes, there are holes in the roster and a lot of work to be done. Neither Ryles nor the club have avoided that reality. We are actively looking.

Recruitment is not finished. We have Junior and Matterson taking up around $1.6M, which once cleared up should help us moving forward.

There are also positive signs behind the scenes. Some sources close to agent suggests TPAs for the Eels are improving (they didn't want to touch us for years) which will be important if we want to land marquee players. Su’a is a good early example.

For that to pay off, the club needs to stay aligned and stable internally. That is something Coryn overlooked, but Mark Bouris identified as the most critical ingredient.

There are no magic bullets, no messiahs, and we won't solve everything through recruitment. Look at the Panthers. Their success is built on systems and pathways. They recruit less than us.

On that our pathways system appears to be improving, and we have invested more there than ever before. The middles coming through look promising, as EA, Sonic, Paul Taylor, and others have pointed out. We won't be able to keep them all, but we have to keep as many good ones as we can.

That is the long game. We just have to stick with it.

Nex year? For me, it's not just about recruitment. There aren't that many marquee realistic targets imo. Guys like Herbie are a bit unrealistic. Not sure how you folks are expecting buys like that. For next year, and the rest of this year, I want to see better defence - attitude - more consistent fight and for us to reduce errors. Consistent errors will kill us even if we have a $20m roster. If we aren't getting close to finals contention by the end of next year, and still performing the way we are, then I will reconsider my position pending circumstances.

If changes are needed in R&R, that is for the club to decide and power brokers at the club.

They do not need more external noise. There is already plenty of that on social media, especially here. James Hooper has nothing on us. At least it makes things interesting, I suppose lol.

Whatever the club decides, the priority should be on internal alignment and continued improvement in all facets. There won't be quick fixes.

                    • HOE,

I’ll make this my last post on this, all good.

No one is claiming anyone should join an echo chamber, your faith & positivity towards the Eels system is very respectful, as mentioned.

But, not all criticism is negative, we cant steer all criticism into one ‘poo throwing’ bucket in an attempt to destabilise valuable critique & discussion, either.

Which, has been happening a lot lately towards respected (and generally positive) posters.

As always, you make some great points & love hearing the TPA’s points.

Lots there we could go back and forth on, but we won’t agree, so all good.

Thanks for the detailed response as always.
                    • Hi NOS,

                      Great reply. Respect brother.

I agree. It's good that everyone can have a say and it's not all the same.

                • It's a worrying sign when a solid few of us on here start to all have the same concerns.

Hopefully we're all jumping at shadows. I just see so many comparisons to some of BAs tenure and where he also got hindered and stuck and am worrying that we haven't fixed some of the fundamentals in the club prior to just swapping out the coaching staff (for a rookie coach).

I'll be extremely pleased to be wrong.
