We coud be at least be 2 or 3 wins further up if we had some more astute work from the coach. Although many on here rave about Ryles - and personally I like him and the things he is trying to do - he is making as many rookie errors as any of the players.

What does "astute" mean? It means tactically aware, understanding weaknesses, communicating clearly and applying all the correct resources available.

One of the obvious things last night was that Ryles overplayed Moses role - we became so predictable. We need more tactical adaptibiity and creativity.

Farnsworth sat defensively on Moses when ever he went to the blindside he loves. Just about every set Moses got his hands on the ball (nothing wrong with that) but every time the variation was negligible. There had to be room for shorter kicks as well as the perenial long ones. Not once did Moses really take a run. Were there occasions he could have lifted the pace? Could Moses sometimes be used as a dummy with a point of attack coming from somewhere else?

Are we contestng the ball enough? Having your kicker back is one thing, but at no stage did we get into a position to really challenge the receiver. On the odd occasions we did, we did not contest the kick. It seems the players are under instructions to stand next to the receiver and hope he drops the ball. I do not understand this non contested kicks. The same applies with the drop outs and in some cases defensively where they allowed the attacking side to make the mistake. That's fine when it works, but bloody awful if it doesn't. Perhaps, it is in part the fear of being penalized or sin binned? It's an areas that is undermining us.

Another issue is Ryles' selections.

Matterson should have been playing last night and he would have provided a completely different drive from the "pigs". I thought Junior tried hard but he was a bit out of sorts, almost like him needing to be prodded to get moving (herding cattle). Nothing wrong with Hopgood and Williams games, they are the workers in the pack and the people on here do not understand that or more the point appreciate it.

Russell is honest as the day is long, just a second grader filling in and he stops progress by not creating anything. Does him being solid actually weaken our game?

This game was there for either team to win on the night. Unfortunately, it was a flick of the coin and we lost.

One final thing: people need to get over the constant BA bashing. The guy has gone. But it seems that anything the side does badly is laid on his shoulders. The other things we need to understand are that its fine to have plenty of money to spend, but unless the people we want want to come to Parramatta and play for us, then they won't come! Build it and they will come, selections and poor communication with players is not part of building anything. There are players in Reserve Grade that are going well that are not geting a look in, there are players in first grade that seem to being favoured, I don't no why?

        • Not sure that is a good reflection on Ryles to be frank. I bet you guys would either cut the strings or manage your way around it, in your respective businesses.

A lot of what Bluey, LB and Coryn said have a "conjecture" about them but it belies the fact that he picks him in the 22 and mostly 18 every week.

Can you not see that is poor management regardless of your individual subjective opinions on should he be playing on "face value".

We know/guess the rhetoric but know nothing about the facts.

          • But it's how you set standard poppa, it's the old get on the bus and we know Ryan doesn't like getting on the bus. I went to a partners training session and matto stopped in the middle of the session and went to the physios and then was doing his own training at his own pace. I thought maybe he tweaked something but now I'm not so sure. Either way it's a bad situation for all. I do agree having him would have given us more of a chance in every game but if you don't set standards and maintain them then you never move forwards and upwards as a club

    • Of course he does, but do we have the ability to get players out of their deals as that's our only option to get quality. Clubs can with money but can we?

  • I do believe this is where getting a player like Galvin helps us immensely. He doesn't rely on his Halfback to create something or organise, he can create on his own, that's the type of versatility we need.

  • Don't forget that we missed 2 conversions, which was the difference. Yes we probably should have won this game, but if Redcliffe lost they would have said the same thing. With Lomax back we can expect him to ice those conversions, which could make a significant improvement to our chances of winning.

Regarding Matterson, I doubt he gets on the NRL field this season. Not sure what's happening there, but that's the reality. This game is closer than it would have been a month ago.

    • Good points Finney!

  • Moses needs to mix it up play closer to the ruck on occassion not one dimensional ....should of taken some cues from Kodi Nickorima, his short plays up against the grain and up the guts were really effective ..then again our defense is not adapable to whats in front of them ..Iongi for all his positivies his abilty in the clutch and defensively a long long way to go.   As for Boobie man ...he is a ball runner nothing more some real shit on tackle 5 from him.....

I can see the 2026 media copy now every jorno frothing at the 40 years no premiership narrative ....yeah thats going to be fun NOT

    Cmon Ryles smarten up

    • We should have iced this game easily but blew it with dropped and pinched balls.

Russell can't convert from wide, but will Lomax take over the kicking next week or will he follow Mitchells concern with re-injuring his foot, with Origin near.

Hope Matto can be persuaded to leave as soon as possible with us throwing in $200 K to assist his departure.

      • Agree with you Richard, but if you were getting Matto to leave early, there must be a reason, otherwise he will strengthen his (Ryles/our) side,

I just thought of this as I replied to Richard, is it possibe that in terms of his contract that he has to pick Ryles in the 22 or 18 to satisfy a clause where maybe Matto could take legal action. That clause maybe subject to form, which he basically meets. Otherwise why bother picking him in the 22 at all and just play him Reserve Grade or even lower for that matter.

        • I consider a clause like that in the guys contract would be a stretch Pops.

I know you rate Matto but I never could, and once again it has nothing to do with choosing to take the time out and not pay 'that' fine.

I remember when Matto would show some ball-making skills and be an assett to his team, now I see him as doing just enough to get a pass mark from the coach and make sure he doesnt get injured.

He was a good player once, no more.

          Are we still pals Pops.....chuckle.
