We coud be at least be 2 or 3 wins further up if we had some more astute work from the coach. Although many on here rave about Ryles - and personally I like him and the things he is trying to do - he is making as many rookie errors as any of the players.
What does "astute" mean? It means tactically aware, understanding weaknesses, communicating clearly and applying all the correct resources available.
One of the obvious things last night was that Ryles overplayed Moses role - we became so predictable. We need more tactical adaptibiity and creativity.
Farnsworth sat defensively on Moses when ever he went to the blindside he loves. Just about every set Moses got his hands on the ball (nothing wrong with that) but every time the variation was negligible. There had to be room for shorter kicks as well as the perenial long ones. Not once did Moses really take a run. Were there occasions he could have lifted the pace? Could Moses sometimes be used as a dummy with a point of attack coming from somewhere else?
Are we contestng the ball enough? Having your kicker back is one thing, but at no stage did we get into a position to really challenge the receiver. On the odd occasions we did, we did not contest the kick. It seems the players are under instructions to stand next to the receiver and hope he drops the ball. I do not understand this non contested kicks. The same applies with the drop outs and in some cases defensively where they allowed the attacking side to make the mistake. That's fine when it works, but bloody awful if it doesn't. Perhaps, it is in part the fear of being penalized or sin binned? It's an areas that is undermining us.
Another issue is Ryles' selections.
Matterson should have been playing last night and he would have provided a completely different drive from the "pigs". I thought Junior tried hard but he was a bit out of sorts, almost like him needing to be prodded to get moving (herding cattle). Nothing wrong with Hopgood and Williams games, they are the workers in the pack and the people on here do not understand that or more the point appreciate it.
Russell is honest as the day is long, just a second grader filling in and he stops progress by not creating anything. Does him being solid actually weaken our game?
This game was there for either team to win on the night. Unfortunately, it was a flick of the coin and we lost.
One final thing: people need to get over the constant BA bashing. The guy has gone. But it seems that anything the side does badly is laid on his shoulders. The other things we need to understand are that its fine to have plenty of money to spend, but unless the people we want want to come to Parramatta and play for us, then they won't come! Build it and they will come, selections and poor communication with players is not part of building anything. There are players in Reserve Grade that are going well that are not geting a look in, there are players in first grade that seem to being favoured, I don't no why?

I wonder if we can get a Medicare pensioner concession Pops.
Nothing wrong with some good old ba bashin
Good read Pops, I agree with your point regarding Russell but not much else. Ryles is doing more right then wrong, and under the circumstances especially well. As stated by Mutts & Chiefy, it's our roster above all else. I'll judge him on his level of 'astuteness' when he has a more worthy squad to work with. Moses was poor by his standards Friday night, I don't agree that Ryles overplayed his role. And again it's hard to be critical of Moses as we have one of the worst packs in the comp.
Matto is not playing for good reason, I look forward to the day he departs our club.
In regards to BA, I personally hold no hatred towards the guy. There is though no denying the fact however that he has played a significant role in the demise of our club (along with others who I have openly expressed my point of view on & have not been held accountable for their poor performances).
Lastly you mentioned players being overlooked, I'm curious, what players in reserve grade are you referring to?
Well I am glad you enjoyed the read Modog LOL
Look there are a number of descrepancies in my summation but I am essentially frustrated to a point of us lacking cunning.
""We have one of the worst packs in the comp"" Whilst I cannot argue with that, I could create an argument that they don't have to be. Asuteness comes into play!
"Matto is not playing for a good reason" Please explain what that reason is, everyone has a view, but nobody knows? If astuteness is involved explain why nobody knows and also explain why he is picked at 18 and then dropped?
"Moses played poorly by his standards"" well Moses has been renowed to go missing, the same way Dyllan has, why is this so......... An astute coaching move' would to ask the question.....what will Dolphins do tactilly to Parra?............ummmm? maybe we should sit on MM and also set our back 3 deep to counter his kicks.....we know MM also loves to attack on the right blindside and he is linking across field so we need to recognise that, also get into his face every time he kicks the ball.
OK the asute coach would then anticipate this and counter measure along with MM I might add to alternative plays.
Can the astuteness of the coach and player be questioned on this?
""what players in reserve grade are you referring to""?
Most specifically Matterson and to an extent Joash Papilli and I would be looking at a winger to replace Russell and play Simmonsson in the centre.
Now all these things I have said, the ones I feel strongly most about would be the lack of astuteness in the handling of Moses game and the non selection reasoning of Matterson.
I don't disagree with all your points and everyone of them has a value from an opinion sense, I am just trying to create something on the reverse side of the picture being painted.
Unfortunaely we have a lot of opinions on here (not saying specifically yours btw) that are "too absolute""
Dick heads like Chief for ever carrying on about BA, Wiz's obvious agenda with Dyllan Brown, Wiz cannot even comment on a game day blog with referencing the bad things DB does and showing why the good things are just a fluke.
It goes on some ""wag"" suggested he didn't even know if Guymer (assume criticism) was even a footballer. These guys have no idea about ever having played a high level of sport, let alone make judgements about them in terms they could not comprehend. Guymer may be a disappoinment to some on here but to question the fact that he is playing NRL after a highlighted junior career implies a lack of integrity. Criticise him by all means, but lets not question if he is ""even a footballer""
So in summary my blog was a conversation piece and in your words ""a good read" but basically you didn't agree with it ""Fair enough"" but I am a contrarian and look to take the side in a debate that's not winning to bring out the best of undërstanding, "why not" hopefully this enables a clearer discussion, because I am not happy in criticising Ryles, I genuinely think the guy has enormous potential. I just hope that the type of discussion we are having is similar to what he, the coaching staff and senior players are also thinking about. i.e. How do we do it better !!
I haven't made too many sugestions in that context, just hoping they are!
At this stage I just can't criticise JRs level of astuteness, for a rookie coach under such circumstances I think he is doing well. You may be right Pops & time will tell. I see it differently at this stage.
Now as for the Matto situation. I don't know the real reason so I'm only going on my own assumptions based on the Matto I've witnessed in his time at Parra and the fact I have trust in JRs judgement. I personally have never met the bloke but based on his inconsistent performances for us & him choosing to sit out 3 games as opposed to paying the fine that year imo spoke volumes for the type of person he is. And Iihave it on good authority that the guy is exactly that, it's Ryan first, his team mates and the club second. So with that in mind, you have a rookie coach in JR, come to a club that is in desperate need of a roster overhaul and culture change, make a statement by leaving such an individual in reserve grade and telling him he is good to leave. I applaud such and strongly believe the team is better without him and I'm sure this is part of the plan going forward, short term pain perhaps...but long term gain.
I value your point and appreciate you creating something on the reverse side of the picture being painted. And you're right this is nothing more then my opinion, I've been wrong many a time:) just ask my wife!!
Hear, hear to genuinely thinking JR has enormous potential, and yes I hope so too!
I think asking questions is more productive than having the answers.
Middle 1/3 pops you don't need to over think this too much for the most part the more physical side in the middle normally get the job done in attack and defense.
There's is no lack of astute coaching that can help that.If you get bashed in attack and defense in key parts ie foward hit ups and back 5 effectiveness that puts you behind the 8ball.
Our answer was to move the ball which gave us opportunities but the lack of execution under pressure didn't go our way.You throw in the missed kicks it just ended how it did.
