Poppa's Corner; A Retirement package for MON

One of our wags on here suggested a way of getting rid of MON is retiring him.... a tongue in cheek suggestion may I say! I'm sure he can be sacked if required?

A retirement package or sacking  may not be necessary. We will still need  to find a replacement for him and frankly it is up to Ryles and the CEO to say we need more in the position of GM Football.

Hard to argue with that need face value, me as a past supporter of MON having suggested previously that I am surprised he still  with us.

I have also thought in recent times that he has been kept because he had a focus on the total scene, grade and junior developments,

Interesting in the sense that everyone rubbishes him on his negotiating ability. We really cannot judge him on that, as it is subjective. Many on here will say he can be judged and he has failed.

Frank the Tank made a defence for him based that it is a hard job if your hands are tied. We won't argue that one with Wiz but I do not hold him totally responsible and the so called abject failure's of R&R, LB made the point that our recent signings and success gives him a success that has not been aknowledged.

Just to throw another opinion in......How's this sound?

I wonder if we should get someone like an ex or current player manager just to do contract negotiations and leave MON with the overview football role. Once they agree on who they want let the assigned Head Hunter  can go after the target..... and/or have the same person quietly make it known who we don't want. It can be a totally different player management philosophy.

Maybe we can loan juniors/development players to Perth or  PNG  on the same basis that Melb seem to do it. Also it is someone who can monitor who is after our juniors and what defences do we have to combat and manage them.

This type of role fundamentally doesn't necessarily sit as an automatic for a good General Manager Football and maybe this ancillory management role is a good way to go.

        • Opportunities are there to be taken LB, go for them son......are you sure "all of them are" Frank the Tank reckons he has 14 inches of blue steel sharpened and in the scabbard. Mind you that was about 10 years ago, its probably a bit tempered now!

    • A mate of mine is a Wests Tigers fan / long time member etc. His words - you can keep that clown O'Neill. He respects him as part of the 2005 winning team over there, but has zero respect for him as an administrator. He can't believe Parramatta is still holding onto him.

      • Wests nearly got him back in 2023.

        • But ultimately said no thanks, because they could see the damage he was causing to the Parramatta roster at the time.

          • Your possibly right "iamnot" but you need to be a bit more credible (not to mention discerning) that a mate of yours is a Tiger fan and therefore a good judge.

      • He's a dope. How a bloke goes from being in charge of the Deli section of a supermarket chain to being in charge of our team operations still baffles me.  Fuck he wasn't even in a controlling position of the deli segment , he was at floor operations level. Before that he worked at a gym doing PT advice 😂 and had a part time gig on the MRC .

Tigers were in a very desperate position then and even they didn't think he was worth saving. They saw the writing on the wall and fucked him off whilst they had the chance to do it without any financial repercussions.

        • You invent a new story every week Wizzy, I heard he was the bottom rung in soft drink sales, but the manager saw his potential and took him to Las Vegas, where became a hit with Manpower.

          Stories certainly get exagerated.

    • I've met Mark a few times and he joins the Supporters Group Alliance to provide some info on football operations. He doesn't go into too much detail when it comes to recruitment but will answer questions more broadly about squad composition and prospective targets. He's not a source of mine by the way.

Now, while we all sit on this site and state we're crap at recruitment/retention, I'd say much of that reaction has to do with who we're reportedly chasing rather than who we sign or actually miss on.

For example, that squad that made the 2022 grand final was almost entirely put together by MON. There's a lot of good recruitment and talent ID in that squad. So much so we lost a bunch in the end. Some of that was poor work on his part, and in other ways it's simply a part of rugby league. No grand final side stays together.

And while we're criticising him over the "loss" of Galvin. He's also the same guy who recruited Lomax, Iongi, Ryley Smith, JAC etc.

We keep wanting some massive name, but those types of names rarely actually hit the open market. The majority of rugby league recruitment is about finding those diamonds in the rough, squad players who can do a job and just regular NRL players.

      • Do you know if we are chasing some big names? We are very quiet on that front, however we normally are quiet in general.

  • Head hunt Peter O'Sullivan from Newcastle for our Head of football.

Hes helped gather a nice talent pool at the Dolphins.

Vastly experienced and knows the player market inside out I'd have a crack at him.

CEO roll all your chips to the middle of the table for Matt Cameron. He's miles ahead of what we have at the position now has over seen a pathway empire at Penrith.

While both would be long shots I'm going hunting regardless as I'm sick and tired of saying the same shit about what we have now.

One of 2 things has to happen we either have to have equal resourcing to head hunt talent or have better talent and recruitment pathway leadership and evaluation if we truely want to end this premiership drought.
