I'd say losing Stef probably hurt more since we lost both Oregon Kaufusi and Marata Nuikore after our Grand final. We've brought in average players since. Maybe Hopgood is the exception.
Apart from that Dylan Brown screwed us declaring his leaving after Talagi was promised the 5/8 position at Panthers whilst we were offering centre/wing. R& R stupid player heavy clauses with DB fecked us hard both ways losing BOTH players.
Actually we offered Talagi Fullback originally.
I don't recall that. I don't think would have offered that with Gutho still there.
We had at the time told Gutho he's not wanted and pushed for Talagi at 1. He signed with Penrith and we got Iongi.
How did Dylan screwd us? I thought Parra never offered close to what New Castle offered him.
Nor should we have. He would have been idiotic to turn that down
I don't disagree. Purposely or not the timing of his declaration of departure after Talagi agreed terms with Penrith was catastrophic for us.
Dylan didn't screw us - we gave him a gazillion get-out clauses in his contract and he rightly used them. His manager should have been fired if he didn't make use of those clauses to test the market.
We should never have allowed the clauses in the first place, they stopped us from being able to plan and we ended up letting the wrong players walk and we chose to go all in on a player who had a super iffy contract.
Supremely poor judgement on the Eels part.

I agree 2 very good players, that perhaps more real thought should have gone into how to keep one.
