Our cup team just keeps winning ?

I need some of our cup watchers to tell me why this squad keeps winning games despite half our first grade roster being released lol ? Lot of our current nrl side could be in cup if we had the nrl players to use. Do we have that much depth in our pathways that it just doesn't matter ? Twiddale Volkman really unbeatable ? Club gets a lot of hate for retention but something must be working in those lower grades

  • The reason why we're winning in cup is the implementation of Ryles's systems.

Now in cup where roster strength is pretty evenly distributed throughout teams, Ryles's defensive structures and training are ahead of the game hence our high standing.

In the NRL we are seeing the fruits of Ryles's systems,  but our roster isn't yet established, and we are giving teams 2 million dollars worth of cap head start, due to a heap of players who are on the books but are playing in England or aren't playing re: Matterson, Lane,  Hands, Cartwright,  Simmonson,  Ofehengaue,  then on top of that we've had above average injuries to key personnel,  and our spine is relatively inexperienced.

It also shows that Ryles knew which players to trim from cup, as last year's team was full of other teams rejected players as BA liked taking less risk on calling up younger debutants in order to save himself.  Every Ryles signing has had a positive impact in every grade - he's a great judge of talent.

The fact that our NSW cup is doing so well on an even playing field,  should give every fan a massive confidence boost, as to when Ryles gets the NRL roster he needs - look out.

    Cayless also deserves credit

  • Our cup team has a good mix of NRL experience and young talent. Basically every player in that team is either trying to get an NRL contract or break into the NRL.

Combine that with an aligned coaching philosophy and you get a pretty good NSW Cup side that can cope with regular changes in personnel.

  • Well yeah mainly the juniours really.

Penisini, Twiddle, Nanva, Lokeni, Hunter, Pryke have been mainstays of the Cup side and they are all Jersey Flegg eligible this year.

Others like Samrani, Latu, Guymer, Volkman have done well when given a chance there. And of course early on Joash and Hawkins.

They've also had consistency in the pack: Greig, Lussick Mataele have been 8-9-10 all season, and Mataele especially has done well.

So all in all, it's quite a healthy combination for a Cup side.

I know you say it won't be, I think it could be."
