Our Centres

Atm I think that both our centres are destroying great work from our inside men.We are blessed with gun wingers only to be stifled by ineffectual centres who can't draw and pass or break a tackle or God forbid a line break.Samrani is am absolute gun and needs to be signed long term.Russell and the penis need to be moved on.No point having Lomax and Jac on wings if centres can't feed them.MAJOR ISSUE.AND YES I AM YELLING.

  • Jamie, i've been saying that since Lassie was a pup. So many movements get stopped by their lack of speed, or footy nouse, so many go unnoticed by most. We have classy p,at akers and classy finishers, where we lack is the centre position not being capable.

  • Lomax to left centre - inside JAC should be considered when Simmonson comes back. Lomax - JAC combo would be deadly. Good gift for whoever is our 5/8 too!

Moses - Papilli/Penisini/Samrani- Simmonson on the right. Moses can work with that

  • I'm going to disagree with most on here about Russell. Our left edge thanks a lot to JAC communication is tough to break down defensively and Russell is doing a super job on the defensive side of the ball. Is Russell ever going to be a Latrell Mitchell or Matt Gidley? No, but some of the plays last night were simple catch and passes which Russell definitely has in him. He's still building his confidence in 1st grade and the more teams he helps shut out defensively, his confidence with grow on the other side of the ball.Defence wins comps and I'd much rather an average centre that's rock solid in defence than a flashy centre that misreads and can't tackle (Waqa)

    • I'm with you mate, I can't recall the last time someone scored down our left side. Plenty on here bagged Tom Opacic but geez we missed him when he was gone. Not every player in the 17 needs to be a superstar, we also need players on a modest salary who can be relied upon to do a job and Russell fits the bill. Sure there's room for improvement, but the effort is there and he will get better with more time with JAC.

    • I think a lot of this edge help comes because of the reassurance that the inside is coming.

If you go back and have a look at Ryley Smith he's huge when it comes to push from the inside and the rest is just easy after that.Once you know your inside shoulder is protected you just need to drift and stay connected it's not a really hard concept to grasp and throw in the fact now our middles are a bit smaller and aren't as laterally comprimised it makes it even easier again.

The reason Russell is going so well is because the whole structure is more connected they aren't getting isolated and they line speed when teams try to stretch on us is there also.

      • All of the above Coryn. My point is he's doing a job. How many centres are there that are amazing both sides of the ball? Latrell ? Joey Manu? Chrichton? Only 3 I can think of. Best is probably next tier down, and then there's a big gap. And you are 100% right, the middles and the edges are more connected than I've seen in a long time

        • I reckon the Dogs and Sharks have the 2 best centre pairings imo.

I agree he is doing his job to his credit and another thing he does well that not many talk about is bringing the ball out he doesn't shirk his hit ups there either coming out of trouble generally finds gaps between players and is quite physical to doing so.

The thing I dislike about his game and @EA and I have a laugh about this all the time is his ball skills putting JAC away.Sometimes he'll come up with a sublime catch and pass then the week after he'll miss it completely the consistency though a small thing can be big in close games.

  • At current rate our centres can be improved upon massively.

Russell is sorta at his peak, Penisini still has levels to (re)discover.

    We have Richie coming through.

I'd target Farnworth for 2027 to play left centre, that'd be a dream.

But yeah I do think if our centres click we would have had 2 more tries each match last few rounds maybe.

    • Yehez Richie hasn't been too flash the last 2 games.

His partner Araz Nanva currently looks a better prospect

      • Araz does look good but Richie hasn't looked bad either. He started the season quite well. In any case, I'd invest in one centre and groom someone else from the juniors if Will Penisini doesn't improve.
