Moving along or Moving aside

Talk is again about our next coach, some talk was about  Slater, as a player  he always hated Parra (mainly because of Hayne).....that said they are only talking wish lists and fantasy calls.....Mick Potter had some time at Parra and I am not sure he would want to come back. Flanagan has got himself in a position where the personal pressure on him could put him into Paul Green territory.

Ciraldo was our best bet, mainly because of the knowledge he holds over the Penrith/Parra junior systems....I suspect there were not enough lateral thinking people around at Parra to work that out.

The best coach probably doesn't exist on a resume, the best coach will evolve from a support base and structure that Parra can provide administratively, it seems unfortunately that this boat may have left as well.

That leadership is supplied at other clubs by astute people such as Gould, Sheens and even Ikin and that is not an automatic formula just a good start.

Jim Saratinos has done a fine job for Parra as CEO, but in a time of turmoil that required his expertise. BA has done essentially the same....

..................its a case now of knowing whether its either or both to move on or step aside!

I'm sure that Saratinos would be a natural fit for the Leagues Club and I'm not sure what BA wants to do....he bloodywell needs a good holiday from the game, but he will pick up a good gig 12 months down the track. If he loves Parra too much to go elsewhere then the topic of the headline says it all!

Start thinking administration capable of picking and guiding a coach, maybe listening to a Slater rather than appointing him may be a different style of approach from our current admin.

  • The club had a great opportunity to go after Peter Parr, loads of experience and success with pathways been at clubs that have tasted premiership success - BA is on borrowed time, I'd be surprised if  the CEO is not looking for a replacement

    • I would be very surprised if he is

    • Your last point is spot on Brissy, i love Ciraldo and wanted him badly at Parramatta. But 5 years is ludicrous when he has only won 3 games as an NRL coach. 3 max is enough for a new coach.

Brissy i want to know though, not sure if i have asked you and sorry if i have, but let's say BA is gone at the end of the year either from falling on his sword, sacked or simply both parties parting ways. If you had the choice to pick our next coach, who would you go for, i do not wanna hear this nobody is better stuff, just put on the spot BA is gone they come to you to pick anyone available who are you picking?

        • Good example Brissy, LB, 5 years maybe ludicrous in your eyes but it takes two to tango and Ciraldo arguably wanted some security (understandable) we would never know what clauses either party has to get out with and it would be fair to say that smarter people than us came up with whatever process was put in place.

Forget the semantics and move on with Parra, the dogs have been in the process for quite a while now.

          • LB, sure, conventional wisdom says 5 years is a big gamble. But, if you were an up-and-coming coach which club would go for? One with wealthy sponsors, Gus, a diehard Dogs board, that keeps signing marquee players & says we'll back you long-term. Or one which says we'll back you for 2 or 3 to reduce the investment risk.

Five years is as much a symbolic statement of commitment. It's a calculated gamble, or leap of faith, by Gus and co.

Anyway, if Ciraldo flops after 2-3 years, can anyone see him lasting the full term?

Worst case, I would assume Gus and the key stakeholders at the Dogs see Ciraldo improving the culture at the Dogs - getting some of that Panthers in the joint (that Gus knows only too well) - leaving the place better off - even if he fails to bring a title or threat to do so, and must be let go of.

Bottom line, if Ciraldo can't do it in 5 straight years, it's unlikely he'll do it in his single tenure. The game's history, of over a century, suggests it.

Outside of Bellamy, only two coaches in the game's history since 1908 have taken more than 5 years in an unbroken tenure to win a title: Steven Folkes (2004, in 7th season with Dogs, that includes a salary cap drama); and Shane Flanagan (2014, in 6th season with Harold Holt's Sharks).

Using the the Wiz defence we could say ... ah well... Bellamy (2003-now) took 10 years to legally win a premiership. But, look at what happened before that. He had five years wiped out including 2 stripped titles, 4 grand final appearances, 3 stripped minor premierships. It effectively means it took him 5 legal years - with 5 illegal years of history being wiped out. Why I believe it's a false comparison with Arthur; a false hope.

Brad Arthur is in his 9th (say eight taking 2016 away) and still is at a loss to explain his team's Jeckly-Hyde culture. At the Souths pressor he was at a loss to explain the poor performance, shrugged his shoulders, noting "he'd look into it". The fact he said that three weeks before the finals, after nine years - says a lot.

The issue is now some of the best coaching options have already been taken up by other clubs. And our board along with Arthur aren't the most trailblazing and cutting-edge minds or leaders of all time. Professional, sure.

But if you compare it to the diehard passion, business weight, movers and shakers that exist teams such as the Roosters, Storm, Penrith Cowboys, Broncos, Souths and even Manly - you'll see what we actually lack...

    • Fair point Brissy, had to go back and re read it and in my defence, i have worded it with a different intention to what it can read like.

"Start thinking administration capable of picking and guiding a coach"  Yes, it is not meant to be guided in that way and could be better intended with "supporting"..... no question once the decision has been made and the parameters' outlined then it is his baby....good pick up Brissy....good to see you back!

    • What is the difference between an untried coach at 5 years Ciraldo and 9 years for the Eels coach ?

  • Can Daniel Anderson still coach?

    • I think he's a great coach. The only one to criticise Hayne then got the boot. He's currently working for the roosters in a recruitment role. The roosters convinced the NRL they could rehabilitate him after the eels fiasco. Apparently the roosters are the only team that can rehabilitate bad boy players and administrators. He had a 2year restriction on what role he could have but not sure when that expired or what he's allowed to do after that.

    • I don't think DA would be that welcome given his connection with "cash payments (unproven)" at the end of the Sharpe era.

Whilst he is a good coach, he is not what Parra needs to go forward with.
