Might be a Dumb Question

Why doesn't Australia drill for their own oil here in Australia or offshore? I'm more than certain they would find oil and this would be beneficial to the Australian economy. I just don't understand whythey don't. Petrol here in parts of Qld is now $2.25 a litre for Diesel

  • Australia has about 100 offshore oil drills. Obviously we don't have enough oil to last forever and although I don't know how much of our own oil we use we would be smart to safe it and continue to import it as long as possible no matter what the cost.

    • We do have a lot of oil. And I mean a lot of oil. They are not sure if they will allow  drilling it up because  of the carbon footprint.  Recent events may force them to release it

  • It's a fair question and I'll do my best to explain. Australia like it's modern fauna had dinosaurs that were unique to Australia only. Australian dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago and being that all the land based dinosaurs were herbivores they turned into coal, it's hard to explain, but has something to do with the chloroform they ate and their natural smegma being compressed together over millions of years. We didn't have any carnivorous dinosaurs, they turned into oil. Hope that helps.

    • Monto doesn't believe in dinosaurs,  the bible has no mention of them.

      • If it helps bring the oil prices down he might

    • 65 million year old compressed smegma. Gross.

  • The oil in Australia is not good  enough to refine into petrol. It is suitable to refine into diesel. It has got to do with the design of the refineries. No one refinery in the world  is capable of refining all the types of crude oil

    • The gov injects a shit load into the economy. 800 million  for the 2 refineries to guarantee  they will continue to refine oil in Australia. The company  I work for was given 20million  if we guaranteed  to spend 80mill  of our own money to buy modern production  machines

  • It is a fair question.
On that sort of topic, a mate and I were talking about the whole global situation and he was saying, why don't we look after ourselves more, in that we have enough resources, food, energy to provide for our 26 Million people, are these global trade agreements really beneficial to us? Sure we get cheaper cars and such but the question is probably simplistic, but I am not sure why we can't be more independent.
Look at the pandemic and what the Gov did, they stimulated the economy with money, jobkeeprer etc, this money was just created by the reserve bank who then "bought" Gov bonds and the money was now in the Federal Gov hands to disperse into the economy. So why can't the Gov do this and inject the money into manufacturing? So that we start to produce some of the products we don't currently manufacture, Cars, electronics etc, we could easily debelop electric vehicles.
I am sure there are smarter people than my mate and I who will explain how international trade is the only way for our economy to survive, I would like to read these discussions as I am not sure the current situation is in Mr and Mrs Australians best interests.
