Junior Pathways and understanding the problem

It appears that we have lost Nathan Brown (ex coach) in our junior structure, reference was made in Slippery's blog that referred to the Parramatta development process.

I suspect it may have been his (Browns) report on "nepotism" that stirred the rats! I think he was asked to do an up to date review and the timing of its release upset a few souls....our FG Coach being the main one.

In saying this I don't think BA is responsible for the perceived failure of our junior development in recent times. He should only ever look at it from afar and then judge it as the final filter. As it stands he just cherry picked and lets say at this point his judgement impresses no one!.....this is a mistake in the process.

With the best intentions in the world development is something that needs to be addressed by the right person, that person is not easily identified and he needs to be identified by an equally right person in the executive. The good ones at this level become legends and are sort after widely by competitors.

Get it wrong and it is a 5 year plus turnaround correcting the ship.....we are going through that stage now and if Nathan Brown has already gone? then the process is back on the back foot. BA shows no ability what so ever in such a development as he is probably more an example of a good junior coach than someone that can put a structure around an enormous programme that needs maximum flexibility in adjusting to changes at all levels and that especially includes nepotism, which is the bane of any and every development process.....nepotism happens, it is human to have favourites, building the system to use it to advantage is the clever management component.e.g. if JA was a standout player....then nepotism (discussion point) would not have raised it's head. The imposters always end up being exposed and I used to say you can favour anyone but it is on the field that they do or die.......identifying this is the key.....BA has failed it badly as we all realise (the honest ones anyway...thanks Hoe).

I saw this happen in a role I had in a junior sport development, yes I saw what happened at both levels and the inability of the senior body to understand the needs of the developing structure because they were hard working volunteers that were out of their depth when going to the next level.

I used to call it the "janitor" syndrome, whereas the "janitor " becomes the president manager of a junior club/district and is totally out of his depth in the process. he see's Johnny score a couple of tries and thinks he is a superstar, next thing is Johnny is up against a peer group outside of his depth and the "janitor" is still fighting to get his quota of Johnny's through his club/district.

Mark O'Neill has to have the bottom line here (not hands on to the actual players, just the process) i.e. the buck stops with him....it is essential that he has the right man/people in the process reporting back and managing the pathways. With the advent of the womens game then this takes a new level of support as well as both branches men and women will add to each others success and making the overall structure stronger..

It would not be conducive to have a strong boys stucture and a weak womens.....each can help drag the others up to a level where excellence is the parameter/standard.

I don't know where we are at present but the "honesty" process really has to come into this one if we are to get it right.

It seems to me that once this is put in place it is essential that parents and players are communicated with in such a way to stop white anting and undermining of individuals. These are the reasons parents and kids become disallusioned as they have no faith in the ability of the system to give them a fair opportunity. This happens in all sports by the way but especially in the highly populated ones like the football codes and cricket. Every system has players leak or missed in a identifying process, it is very important that a catchment is put up for these misses and a process developed to catch and return. This gives confidence to those ones that think there is no future for them after missing the process.

Finance is an area where I appreciate some issues arise with large junior bases, yes its a problem but you are better with more than less. A successful Leagues Club which we now have again is very important in this respect.....we cannot use the Laegues club to alleviate cap issues but they can be a real force in junior development

On a little aside away from the main thrust of this, a similar programme should be in place for referees, the quality that players confront can be very badly treated by incompetent refereeing, apart from the very poor standard I see in First Grade every week, I am appalled when I see the standard of the Second Grade refs. It is imperative that refs and junior structures work together in this regard as players will just give it away if the perceptions of confidence in the reffing becomes overpowering.

  • That's just embarrassing if brown is gone due to his report 😒

my boy has only been playing rugby for 3 -4 seasons and I don't see the nepotism at all 🤔don't know if it's just a hunter rugby thing or I haven't been around long enough ..... regardless am so glad it doesn't sound anything like what I hear from my friends in the hills district

    • If you're not seeing politics and nepotism in a junior club then you're not wanting to see it. I played for a couple of different clubs and at least one team amongst the grades had a bloke who's son was shit so dad took on the coaching gig to ensure he got a run. Usually there was that one family that had coin and used to sponsor the club or financed something to ensure their kid was looked after.

      • I agree with your comments here!

      • Oh I've seen it when he played soccer but just not in his rugby team -

like I said mb I've not been around enough but there's definitely no gossip or murmurs unlike what I hear from my syd friends

    • He didn't go because  of the report, he was hired by the club to do a review and to report back to the club. It was only ever a temp appointment. The author of this blog has conveniently left this out.
if our systems aren't producing the talent we need to ask why ?

      • Brett, I am not sure where you are coming from with the comment "that the author of the blog conveniently left this out?"

The comment implies an agenda and I honestly haven't got one in this case. Unfortunately most of the information I had on the matter comes from this site and we both know how reliable that can be.

        • You started the rabble by implying the coach got the guy punted for his report mentioning nepotism. The whole blog after that is pointless as it paints a picture that there's something untoward going on and it hinges on Brad Arthur.

I think you're being a bit disingenuous trying to seem gobsmacked that Brettles has flagged it.

        • It was in the first sentence. The second paragraph mentioned nepotism, when even the media who reported were at pains to point out that it wasn't referring in any way towards BA and his handling of his son.

    • I played for the Maitland Blacks Carlo but that was in seniors, I've seen nepotism is soccer a few times though. Coaches using their position to push their kids. Who knows with JA, he's only a kid who may develop into something much better, but he is slow in many areas.  Nathan Cleary was only ok a few years ago.

  • So let me get this straight , BA has so much pull that he can get a bloke sacked, but not enough pull that the bloke who wrote the report noticed that BA can have him sacked if he writes a report that shines a light on BA's corruption within the club?  Your bias towards BA is pouring from your ears and nose like a stream of shit.

Brown leaving has zero to do with him wanting to be a head coach and he sees more opportunities at another club. Gotcha .

"Sanders defence in the halves is actually better than Hands. NSW Cup stats would back this statement up as well. Hands is actually a poor defender in the halves. He is barely cup quality in cup. Hands is an out and out hooker in my opnion."
