Form and Frustration

Newcastle’s struggles at home continue, with just one win at McDonald Jones Stadium this year from four games — a Round 2 victory.  Since then, they've dropped six of their last seven games. Despite boasting the fourth-best defence, the Knights’ attack is the worst in the competition.

The Eels, meanwhile, have won only two of their past seven to sit last. The Eels have made more errors than the opposition in every game bar three - and won two of those.

In most games, they’ve shown effort and been in the fight despite lacking punch in the pack at times. But have been undone by poor ball control, errors and poor execution — leading coach Jason Ryles to reflect: "An old bloke once told me, the scoreboard is the last thing that changes.”

Last week's losses for both teams at home reflected those season-long themes.

Last Week: Recap

Jordan posted some decent stats for the Eels last week. What will be his future position?

Against the composed Dolphins at Commbank, the Eels were in the fight once again, but poor ball control (77%-89% completions and 10-6 errors) and bombed tries meant the Eels couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities and good possession (52%-48%). The Dolphins executed better, won some crucial moments, and had the class to pull through 20-16.

Against the struggling Titans at MacDonalds Jones, the Knights couldn’t score a point in the second half. Despite a promising half-time lead of 20-6 they got overrun by the Titans to go down 24-20.

Dane Gagai will make his 300th NRL appearance.

Bottom Line

Despite their ladder positions, only two wins separate the last-placed Eels from the sixth-placed Cowboys and eigth-placed Silvertails. The margin between success and failure in this topsy-turvy season has been razor-thin. A win for Newcastle could re-spark belief and honour a club legend. For the Eels, MOMAX might be the circuit-breaker they’ve been waiting for. Losing has become a habit for them since mid-2023. A win would give them hope of avoiding a spoon and building something for next year and beyond.

  • Fuck how bad are the knights,  I doubt we beat any other team tonight,  maybe 1 or 2, we are getting better but still a bottom 4 performance.

    • Knights are the worst side in the comp currently. They are absolutely dreadful. Right now I don't care. Sometimes you need to run in some tries to get some confidence happening so no complaints from me. But gees they are atrocious.
So we've found our right edge player. Williams. He was epic. Stick him on the right edge and leave him there. Now go and get a few middles. Surely we can grab a few hombres to cart it forward and run amok? I believe it's all that's missing between where we are and becoming a quality team. If we had proper go forward through the middle tonight we win that by a lot more.
Anyhoo for the first time in ages I'm smiling on a Friday night and can enjoy the rest of the weekend's footy. Love it.

      • NRL.com said we made 15 errors and compelted at 77%. Their play the ball speed was easily better too. Not sure how those stats can mean a team win by 22 points lol.

        • @EA, what it does tell you is that stats have role, but that role is non difinitive, mainly for the reason the stats are kept by human beings......yes the same people who ref the game and sit in the bunker making numerous mistakes and then we have the journalists that don't watch a game but just read the stats. A good tackle and a bad tackle are both recorded as tackles. Sometimes a missed tackle is based on effort that failed, whereas if the effort was not made initially it would not be recorded at all.

All you young guys as you go through life will see statistics thrown in front of you all the time, be very wary they don't always play out the way you would expect. Respect them just don't worship them.

Finally in this day of AI and computer geeks, many statistics are created to fit a predetermed endeavour. A good example is the way complaints are handled across service industries and the people employed to do the research knowing the answers, that want to be received. It really does help their appoinment for the next job. I never trusted our marketing people because I knew how naive they were to stats, that's why we see so many stupid adds.

      • I don't think they have that bad of a roster I think  it's more a coaching issue.  O'Brien is about as smart as BA, not very.

    • They have the 1.3 million dollar half coming they'll improve.

  • 3. Williams

    2. Lomax

    1. Paulo

    • Yep!

    • Exactly my thinking EA.
