A claim from Dylan Brown that there are no get-out clauses in his $13 million deal with the Knights has been refuted.
Brown told the SMH in an interview that unlike his controversial Eels contract, which allowed him to leave the deal six years early to sign with a rival club from 2026, there are no get-out clauses littered throughout his massive 10-year deal with the Knights.
However, according to veteran journalist Andrew Webster, that isn’t the case.
“There’s been reports over the last 24 hours that Dylan Brown has no get-out clause during the entirety of the ten-year deal but I’ve been told that’s not right, Webster said on Tuesday night’s episode of NRL360.
“They actually both have get out clauses for the last two years of the ten-year deal which will probably sit better with the Knights’ old boy network who I’m told aren’t happy with this deal but they are too classy to say anything publicly.
“There are clauses, but Dylan Brown said in an interview that they’re no clauses in it but clearly Dylan Brown doesn’t know his own deal because apparently there is and there are also clauses in the Knights’ favour in the last two years.
“That’s a bit more reasonable … It means the Knights are protected over the last two years.”
Brown’s monster deal has dominated the rugby league headlines former players questioning whether the Knights paid massive overs to secure Brown.
The fact that Brown has been average at best for the struggling Eels over the first two weeks of the season has only sharpened the focus on the deal, which is the richest in NRL history.
Since news of Brown leaving the Eels for the Knights broke, Newcastle have trodden out the line that they don’t regret anything and that there are no reservations.
“Buzz (journalist Phil Rothfield) said there’s none (reservations) at all and they’re completely happy with the deal that’s been done,” NRL360 host Braith Anasta put to Webster and foxsports.com.au’s Paul Crawley.
Webster queried that, believing the Knights are on edge about the massive deal.
“It’s the other way around I think. I find they’re very edgy when talking about it. They’re very sensitive to any sort of criticism about it or any discussion about it really,” Webster said.
“The Knights are going to come out and make it seem like everything is hunky dory, but they’d be nervous as all hell,” Crawley added.

I seen this last nite too. Im sure Knights old boys wouldnt be happy with what they have seen past 2 weeks from Brown, think it was Anasta that said that too.
Its always been about the money. This deal has ruffled feathers everywhere. Ponga not pleased.
Lol there still stuck with him for the next 8 years atleast.This will end bad for both parties. The way fletcher sharp is playing you can't tell me he will be pissed off with what brown is earning compared to himself. And atm sharp is showing way more in his first year then brown did.
Slightly off topic - what do you think 1.3 million, for a half, will represent in say 5 years time. 1.3 million could be the new 800k by then. im actually thinking Dylan dudded himself, that being said the bird in the hand...
Im sure there arw ratchet clauses. Cap goes up , Dyls salary goes up.
Forget in 5 years time, is Brown a million dollar now or in the next few years. It doesn't matter what the market say his value is, you need to get $1million value from them if paying that much. Better to pay a lesser half $700-800k and get consistent performances justifying that amount and surround them with other stars instead of 1.3million on inconsistent player who usually delivers $500k of value surrounded by average players.
In 5-10 years time no one knows who will be the best and elite halves will be that is why 10year contracts are ridiculous. With streaming services, less kids watching sport and financial restraint from businesses I don't think the salary cap will increase like recent levels over the next 10years either but ratchet clauses in his deal will see his pay rise anyway.
His deal has a ratchet clause, so it rises with the salary cap, based on a percentage of the cap.
Dylan could be earning over 2 million a season if the cap rises enough.

That's not how ratchet clauses work, and it's not much of a rise from 1.3 million. Ratchet clauses are pretty common in the NRL.
My understanding is that the ratcheting will make is 1.4M average over the 10 years - so an extra 1M all up.
Still not that much extra over the 10 years.

I watched the Johns borthers on different occasions make comments on Brown's signing. You could tell they didn't like the deal but they were very reserved with their comments.
Besides the financial benefit, I just wonder whether Brown has considered how this deal will affect him mentally. He will be the focus of every game with a lot of expectations from the club, sponsors and fans.
At the Eels he's been hiding behind the higher profile players but with the knights it will be all about him.
