Penrith has got some explaining to do with a viral video appearing to catch a veteran trainer red-handed during the Panthers’ golden point thriller against the Cowboys.

The 30-30 draw was full of controversy as both clubs butchered field goal attempts in extra time at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Saturday night.

It appears the most controversial moment of all has only been revealed after the match with amateur sideline footage appearing to show Panthers trainer Shane Elford spraying the ball with liquid from a water bottle before the opening period of golden point.

The viral clip showed the Steeden was left dripping wet after Elford had twice sprayed the ball before handing it to fullback Dylan Edwards to kick-off

“He did it before every kick-off,” Payten said.

“We noticed it in the (coaching) box. I will let the NRL handle it. I don’t know what they’re going to do but it was noticeable to us, definitely.

“I don’t want to say anymore.”

At one point of the viral clip, Elford is seen spraying the ball while talking to hooker Mitch Kenny with other players standing nearby as he committed the act.

  • That's farking disgraceful.  The trainer needs to be banned  from forever entering the feild and the club should lose points.  .   Its downright cheating plain and simple.

The ball being wet makes a knock on a huge possibility after every kick-off.   It's a total disgraceful act that the Panthers have to come out and address

  • Nothing will happen as it's Penrith but those pricks have been cheating in all aspects for years now

  • I'm still dirty when Luai was pulling back Mitch when we'd broken play and were off to score a try. 10 in the bin that was and the game was Parra's in the 2021 semi.

Hope those cunts get pointed deducted but I could find anything about penalties for altering the state of the ball in rugby league.

    • I cant let this game go either. Plus their trainer cheated too to give them a breather when we were killing them and about to score imo. Sure the panthers were fined $10k for cheating but the damage was already done and a week later they won the GF.

  • Is this the same prick who ran on to the field a few years back and stopped play against us when we were about to score?..,,Then had the hide to spray our players at full-time.

The Panthers should cop a massive fine and the trainer banished for the year. The Panthers trainers are renowned for staying on the field for no reason just barking instructions from behind play.

    • Yes pretty sure it was Elford and Mahoney that had words

    • Different trainer who stopped play Bert

  • Well to be fair it's not like the NRL can say they don't have footage of it. It's not like there are dozens of cameras around that could record any wrongdoings
