Paying overs is a risky choice. Especially if staff (coach/recruitment) are under pressure. Having several players on overs might produce more success in the short term; however, the damage can take many years to recover from. How many players do you think are currently on overs in the Eels roster? I would guess any Eels player currently on $600,000 or more is being overpaid, from what they have shown this year. The Eels haven't got value in 2026 from Moses on $1,000,000 plus at this stage, nor Junior, TDS, and several more. Adding more highly paid players and paying them overs is a recipe for disaster.
It can work, Burton is not like Norman where he tried to take over. Burton is more than happy playing 2nd fiddle and eyes up. But can also do some organising if asked upon him.
You're exactly right Angry. Star of the night even though earlier I had stated he had nothing.....except a kicking game!
Haven't seen that quality in him before and may have to re-assess him. Chuckle

I thought Hayward lifted the tempo when he came on and really had the bulldogs punching holes in the middle which gave Burton room to run which is when he's at his best. Less organising more running (Galvin is much the same). Melbourne must be disappointed with Stefano this year. He's been bog average and got bullied tonight by a second rate forward pack
I hope so we need something...with lomax fucking off we have no elite players in our backline besides Mo and Iongi. and Moses cant goal kick anymore he is rubbish last few years
With new teams in place ready to strike Burton goes to Perth I think Parra have shown there hand and while they may go to 7 figures I think a team like Perth go deeper and are getting dispensation from the nrl also. It's going to be a tough sell for Parra to get Burton in here.
Me it's always been a strike centre a right winger and a middle to change our fortunes. If anything it's outside backs we need especially.Mentioned this ages ago but to land Burton it's 5 years 1.2 mill per season as a starter and the kicker after footy opportunity and a big fat TPA to finish the deal off.IMO that's what it'll take to land Burton. If your not in this ball park don't bother offering as that's what it'll take.
Coryn last week you were making similar offers to land Farnworth. So to your thinking we'd have Moses, Burton and Farnworth chewing up more than one third of our entire salary cap. There's another 27 other players to squeeze into 8 mill, that's not even $300k per player.
I know someone will point out all sorts of holes in these figures but I don't think people realise how difficult it probably is to juggle an nrl roster on an ongoing basis with any number of things that are occurring all of the time.
Actually my thinking here is because this season is farked we start by finding out what juniors are what and actually have a plan for getting new players. If it's a choice between Farnworth and Burton I'm taking the first mentioned because we are so devoid of quality at that position.
In the development stakes we have plenty coming in the middle some sought of replacement plan at 6 but nothing in the outside backs.
Just to clear my position up.
See this stuff isn't as hard as it looks while I think Burton is a nice replacement it basically culls the point in development at that spot. With regards to the mentioned in the outside backs I've seen absolutely nothing that looks like nrl quality coming hence why that's the target area of the market I'm attacking.
Couldn't agree with you more Coryn. Look at how much impact JAC had with Sean Russell. Not only someone like Herbie is a quality player on his own, he would unlock JAC but you could imagine the sort of impact he could have defending next to Lorenzo or Kitouga for example. That communication, presence and experience would just be huge for our young squad
"Wouldn't that be great Longfin, a team of people with the same amount of skill desire and agression as the Legend.
Shall we ask him to give a talk to our team. Chuckle"

"If Ryles is going after Burton that means Lorenzo isn't ready, I mean if Lorenzo was ready to really play NRL he would have debuted against the dogs instead of playing journey man Volkman. Also the players were shifting along means we are about to…"

Best player on the paddock tonight
