Disgraced former NRL star Brett Finch used an online sex chat service to send sick messages about fantasies of having sex with a 12-year-old boy, court documents have revealed.

The former NSW State of Origin hero has endured a stunning fall from grace and on Tuesday he stood in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, where he pleaded guilty to one child abuse material charge.

Looking gaunt and wearing a grey suit, he stood in the back of courtroom 5.5, where his lawyer Paul McGirr entered a guilty plea on his behalf.

According to a statement of agreed facts signed by Finch, between November 2020 and January 2021, he used the “FastMeet” chat service to talk to other users about wanting to have sex with pubescent and teenage boys.

Many of the shocking messages are too graphic to print.

His dramatic downfall was put in motion when Victorian Police arrested Robert Bray, a convicted child sex offender, and began investigating his use of “FastMeet” to exchange child abuse material with other users.

Police identified other users who had used the chat and voice service to exchange child abuse material and NSW Police launched Strike Force Hank.

Over the course of three months, Finch sent other users graphic descriptions of sexual acts he wanted to perform on teenagers and young boys.

“Yeah how you going mate?” read one message he sent on November 6, 2020.

“My name is Brad, 35, masculine build, married.

“Love to have a hot chat, talk about real kinky, having a threesome with a nice 16-year-old boy.”

Portions of the message are too graphic and vulgar to print.

In other messages, he described his desire to “talk about having a threesome maybe with a sexy young 16, 17 year old boy”.

By December 2020, his messages had escalated and he talked about wanting to perform sexual acts with a 12-year-old boy. The details are too disturbing to print.

In another he said: “G’day mate, married guy, 39, muscular bod, would love to be outside, you and me in swimmers, a nice little 16 year old surfer boy comes past.”

In one shocking exchange from January 2021, he made reference to “rugby boys” and engaging in sexual acts with teenage boys.

Finch, 40, was arrested when police raided his Sans Souci home around 6.50am on December 14 last year. He was charged with five counts of using a carriage service to make available child abuse material.

He had an additional two charges laid earlier in the year.

However, police on Tuesday dropped six of the charges and his lawyer Paul McGirr entered a guilty plea to one count of using a carriage service to make available child abuse material.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

When he was arrested, Finch admitted to using “FastMeet” and that he may have spoken about children.

According to the statement of agreed facts, he told officers that the conversations may have occurred when he was “twisted”.

He also told officers that he never engaged in sexual activity with children.

Outside court, Mr McGirr said Finch’s mental health problems had contributed to his offending.

“We just ask that everyone remember that there are mental health issues in play,” Mr McGirr said.

“We have to respect that at this stage, so we’re not going to say anything before sentence.”

Finch will remain on bail and is due to appear before a sentence hearing in the District Court in September before he later learns whether he will be jailed.

Finch had a distinguished 270-game NRL career that included stints at Canberra, Sydney Roosters, Parramatta and Melbourne.

He was a part of the Storm’s 2009 grand final win over Parramatta that was later wiped form the record books because of the club’s salary cap scandal.

Finch experienced the highest of on-field highs, booting the winning field goal for NSW in game one of the 2006 State of Origin series.

He played another 60 games in the English Super League.

Following his retirement, Finch moved into the media and had commentating stints at Channel 9 and Fox Sports.

He checked himself into a mental health facility in 2019 after an incident on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast on which he was pictured with a bloody nose.

“It took a few years, it took three trips to rehab facilities,” Finch told The Matty Johns Podcast of his struggles after retiring in 2013.

“I learned a lot about myself and the things that I’m dealing with. I had to realise I’m not going to get the highs I had in footy and for so long I was chasing that.

“One day I was a football player, the next day no one cares. It’s over. I struggled to get any satisfaction in life.”

Finch will return to court in September.

  • Makes Hayne look like an angel IMO.

    • You certainly are one strange eel if YOU think In any capacity that because Brett Finch is a peodophile it excuses Hayne  from sexual assault ....

I dont give a flying F what Hayne did for our team

  • I never would have picked Finch to be a pedo. Filthy scum. Deserves all he gets

  • Could not agree more Frankie; tbh i am sick and tired of this mental health card being played over the last 10 yrs. It makes real peoples struggles with such issues look disingenuous tbh and its laughable.

That last quote in the article is a bit rich, ' one day i was a football player, the next day no one cares'. That is called life bud, you were given an opportunity because of your football skills to play.......its no different to being in any other job.

  • Bloody Storms players

  • To be fair ...look at his melon! He's had quite a few head knocks by the looks of it. Head injury does effect people's cognitive function.

Always thought he was a weirdo though.

    • CTE will come into account here Badger, there may even be a lawsuit coming once he is out to try and clear his name somewhat. CTE will be the new mental health in the league.

  • I wonder what will happen to good ol Brett Finchstein between now and sentencing in September.

  • John Barilaro tried to play the same card once he realised he was in hot water.

If Ethan is starting as the halfback then he is in the 7."
