My teenage son just blew all of the money he's been saving on a pair of $400 sneakers.
More amazing was that they actually retail for nearly double that he just happened to luck out finding a cheap pair in his size online.
When did $800 sneakers become a thing?

So you just assisted him in the art of buying into a marketing campaign and playing the status game? Maybe a good discussion to now initiate with him is about the difference between expensive because of quality and expensive because of branding. Or, propose some activity - like sky diving etc - to do jointly but he has to pay his share, at which point talk to him about whether the shoes were worth the inability to sky dive (or whatever)
Branding is extremely important to identity, especially people who haven’t been alive long enough for their identity to be built around their achievements.

So I'm very against being judgmental about how people spend their money. It pisses me off no-end when people get on their high-horse about people blowing their money on gambling, booze, or whatever it is. In the end, IMHO life is about making yourself and those who you care about happy.
I think it's the height of arrogrance for someone to suggest they know what is best for another human being when it comes to their expendable income. No one is another person's arbitrer of what constitutes happiness.
He's going to want to go to some concerts in the six months and he's not going to be able to go to them because this is what he has spent his money on. If he's still happy with his purchase then, well, that's his choice but I always favour people learning by screwing up....
The irony of a guy who feels the need to put “ Prof “ in front of his name talking about the status game....
