Where to now for Takairangi?

Talented utility back Brad Takairangi is in limbo since the Tigers pulled out of a deal to sign him.
The Eels came close to picking up the Titans centre/back-rower - but have salary cap problems.
At this stage, it looks like Takairangi may return to the Titans for 2015.

Statistically speaking, Takairangi is a machine. For a utility, he has no troubles in creating dynamic second-phase play, something that is a great asset for him.

He hits the line hard & runs the right lines, evidenced by his tries whilst playing in the back-row. Couple that with a patient, creative and dynamic ability whilst playing in the centres, and he certainly knows how to make the most of a chance.

Sure, he has his fair share of errors & penalties, but a lot of players do. The upside is that Takairangi is verastile and can cover a number of positions across the park, something that we probably lack at the moment.

If Champion and/or Crooks hadn't signed, as I said above, I would strongly consider Takairangi.

  • That actually surprised me, BK.
I mean, I watched most Titans games & saw Takairangi, just didn't think he had so many offloads throughout the season.
It's a very good quality of his obviously. Must stem from his time in the back-row where he's used to battling guys on the fringes to create space.

  • Out of interest for those who want to know, these are Takairangi's 2013 stats:

    Rd 1 (centre): 84m from 8 runs (10.5m per run), 7 tackles, 2 errors, 1 penalty conceded & 0 missed tackles.

    Rd 2 (centre): 67m from 8 runs (8.38m per run), 1 try assist, 2 tackle breaks, 8 tackles, 1 offload, 1 line-break, 2 errors & 0 missed tackles.

    Rd 3 (centre): 62m from 11 runs (5.64m per run), 5 tackles & 0 missed tackles.

    Rd 4: DNP.

    Rd 5 (centre): 22 minutes, 17m from 3 runs (5.67m per run), 1 tackle break, 2 tackles, 1 error & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 6: DNP.

    Rd 7: DNP.

    Rd 8 (centre): 80m from 8 runs (10m per run), 1 try assist, 10 tackles, 1 line-break & 4 missed tackles.

    Rd 9 (centre): 83m from 9 runs (9.22m per run), 3 tackle breaks, 3 tackles, 2 offloads, 1 line-break & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 11 (centre): 103m from 12 runs (8.58m per run), 1 try, 1 try assist, 3 tackle breaks, 7 tackles, 3 offloads, 1 line-break, 1 line-break assist, 1 error, 1 penalty conceded & 3 missed tackles.

    Rd 12 (centre): 40 minutes, 62m from 5 runs (12.4m per run), 6 tackles & 2 missed tackles.

    Rd 13: BYE.

    Rd 19: DNP.

    Rd 20 (centre): 71 minutes, 27m from 4 runs (6.75m per run), 19 tackles, 1 offload & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 22 (centre): 60m from 7 runs (8.57m per run), 14 tackles, 1 offload, 1 error & 4 missed tackles.

    Rd 23 (centre): 68m from 10 runs (6.8m per run), 1 tackle break, 7 tackles, 1 error & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 24 (centre): 38m from 5 runs (7.6m per run), 1 try, 1 tackle break, 14 tackles, 1 offload, 1 penalty conceded & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 25 (centre): 89m from 9 runs (9.89m per run), 1 try, 1 try assist, 1 tackle break, 12 tackles, 2 line-break assists, 1 error & 1 missed tackle.

    Rd 26 (centre): 77m from 10 runs (7.7m per run), 1 try, 2 tackle breaks, 24 tackles, 4 offloads, 1 error & 2 missed tackles.

Overall, another quality season from Takairangi in 2013, with much of the characteristics from 2014 also evident in this year.

If we were to sign him, it'd be a great buy.

  • Ma'u, Edwards, Mannah, Moeroa, and Radradra

  • A centre pairing of Champion and Takairangi would be okay with Hoppa at fullback, Semi one wing and a up and coming junior the other wing. I could live with that as long as we get Watmough and one more good forward to help guide the young pack we have and of coarse get rid of Sefa.

    • You know if we get Watmough I wouldn't be discounting a move to centre for Moeroa. I know I've said previously that he would be wasted there but I also believe we'd be wasting Edwards and Ma'u if they weren't on the field for 80 minutes too. The move to centre for Moeroa would mean that Sandow's defensive issues wouldn't be as noticeable as he'll have Edwards AND Moeroa helping him. It also means that we could bring in Fabian Goodall and not have to worry too much about him defending. This also means we can play Pauli off the bench as a loose forward and he would only have to play 20 or so minutes.
