THE SALARY CAP! IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK!

Please correct me if I am wrong.... Isn't 1 of the main jobs of the salary cap to even the competition by spreading the talent? Sure, some clubs are better run than others and some clubs have other advantages. So can someone please explain.... Without removing the minor premierships won and then stripped from the Storm, since the year 2000 (25 years) 3 clubs ( the Storm 9 times,  the Roosters 5 times and the Panthers 4 times) have won 18 of the 25 minor premierships. This would be fine if the NRL was a 6 team competition,  but it is currently a 17 team competition.

It's my opinion that the salary cap has done the complete opposite of what it is aimed at doing. The stronger clubs have become stronger and the weaker clubs are so far behind.

  • Just an idea that come into my mind when I read your blog.

Hyperthetically, if clubs were not forced to spend 90% (or whatever it is) of the cap when the players they have are not worth that then it may work as intended. A club might have a crap roster (eg our Kearney years). We could 'save' 40% of the cap and then throw a real offer to a few decent players who could improve our performance. These guys might get 2x what they are getting at the other club for a few years and help us improve before going back into the player market as normal.

It may mean clubs and these players $$ go up and down whilst they sort it out but that could be evened out a bit over time with the correct management.

TPAs should not even be mentioned in the Cap rules. They should just be outlawed as any part of a contract. The player manager should get off their butts to get these without any club involvement at all. IMO there are probably zero that are completely at arms length.

  • it's not the cap that's the issue , we all know some clubs can get around it , the sole reason these clubs have dominated is the management. Decent administrators can ensure their clubs attract and keep the talent , albeit by attracting sponsors  who want to top up their star player salaries " at arms length " .  Good clubs can turn their fortunes around in an offseason, other clubs "us" need a 5 year rebuilding period. Us being shit has nothing to do with the cap.

Get a decent administration team and the success will follow. Our management are the equivalent of a Musso up against Ferraris and Lambos.

  • I think the stronger teams have become stronger because they have become even smarter. They know how to appeal to players, keep them happy and work out fair contracts.
The weaker teams like us make dumb salary cap decisions and offer ridiculous contracts.

  • no it doesnt..look at the quality of the game today pretty dire yikes

When you compare the NRL to the AFL (who have the salary cap plus the player draft), the NRL has seen only 8 different clubs win the past 25 minor premierships,  whereas the AFL has had 12 different winners.  Plus, the NRL has seen the Storm as minor premiers 9 times from the past 25 years. During this same period the most minor premierships in the AFL is 3,  Port Adelaide, Sydney,  Collingwood and Geelong have all won 3 minor premierships.

It doesn't make sense to me that the Storm can have 3 players in spine positions who 1 of them can only get a bench spot at best with the Storm, the other 2 play Queensland cup. All 3 players would walk into most other NRL clubs. Surly the NRL would benefit if these types of players are playing top grade football weekly.

    • I hear what you're saying but I stil believe it's due to poor management by the NRL allowing some smarter clubs to bend the rules.  Let me ask this , if we had the Storms administration team pack up and all move to Parramatta , and Parramatta's administration team all move to Melbourne , do you think the Storm would still flourish and Parramatta would still be the anus team of the competition?

Or .. do you think in a few years we'd be successful and The Storm would look like a bunch or retarded budgies running around ?

The cap ain't the problem , the policing of it is . Let's say there was no cap, we still are the team with a doofus like Nathan Brown , a perpetual loser , advising our kindergarten level coach. No player worth their salt wants to come to that system mate. Not unless we have smart administrators who can construct a package that's super attractive without blowing our salary cap.

It's totally the NRL doing a shitty job. Just like our administrators are doing a shitty job by not adapting. I've been trying to direct peoples sights on our administration team for a number of years now , but everyone was too focused on BA . Like we said , careful what you wish for unless we are upgrading , because once he's gone these dopes will still be here making the same bad calls , and listening to a fuckwit like MON , Now BA is gone hopefully it starts to become clear that we are run by rookies. Can't blame BA anymore.

  • NRL have absolutely no interest in multiple premiers. As long as the Broncos, Melbourne and Roosters are in the mix, they are then serving their masters
