The referees are so closely protected these days that it is almost impossible for clubs to comment on a referee without being fined. Maybe they should go back to park footy and referee that.
I am a soccer referee and I cop alot of verbal abuse from supporters and coaches but I've got a tough skin and unless a comment is a personal attack I don't give a shit. I thought we lived in a society where we have freedom of speech.
A coach or player has their opinion and their voice should be heard because at the end of the day they are the ones that are directly affected by a referee's decision. The questions asked of referees are very minimal and even in Harrigan's weekly article on NRL.com he is rarely pushed for his decision or asked difficult questions.
The footage of the charge down is not the clearest and it's almost impossible to see how the defender reacted when the ball was kicked. How the hell did Harrigan get a definitive answer from that footage. The referees need to harden up and stop crying every time they are criticised by a player or a coach. Park referees have to deal with alot more than the NRL referees do. So long as the criticism will lead to intelligent discussion and is not a personal attack on a referee then it should be allowed.
REFEREES: HARDEN THE F$#K UP.

What a load BS.
You are comparing the scrutiny of a park referee to a referee on national television with +500 000 people watching plus other media outlets.
Referees need to be better coached, developed and protected... its the only way to improve the quality and attract more to the profession.
BUT IT HAS GOT SO OUT OF HAND NOW , VERY AMERICANIZED LAWSUITS EVERY 5 MINS
IT AINT A FREE COUNTRY ANYMORE ,WE HAD FREEDOM OF SPEECH TAKEN AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair to the Yanks they do have in the NFL the rule where the coaches can directly challenge the Refs ruling twice throughout the match.
Maybe its time to look at something along those lines.
If Kearney could have thrown down a challenge after the 'charge down that wasn't',we may at least have been able to display our critisism directly as part of the game.Even if the call didn't go our way after a challenge.
Thereby getting it off our collective chests without festering into frustration.
Its actually quite a clever system.A coach and team that loses a tight game without using any of their challenges only have themselves to blame.
