Please do not start me on Sanders again. I do not blame the club for losing Sanders as he wanted to go for what he thought was a better opportunity. Not his fault he thought that and his path was blocked. Had it not been people would complain why we letting Moses/Brown go for Sanders? On top of that Talagi was seen as a Fullback apparently so didn't matter if he stayed as he would be staying at 1.
Though i think Walker will be the 6. But here is the thing Hawkins and Volkman are depth, they are depth for a reason. If we had amazing back-up halves they would be gone elsewhere so not fair there to knock them since they are what they are at the club.
Disagree LB, Sanders is backup at the Raiders.
And he will be starting more likely next year. Staying at Parramatta no guarentees as we all thought Brown stays when he signed for Canberra.
We still could have kept him.
If Melbourne and alike can keep there youngsters surely we can come up with a plan to stash ours. Now wheather this is paying them more than what's normal to do so without it counting against the cap I'm pretty sure this has been done throughout the nrl.
We just aren't a strong enough club to let talent like DB Sanders and Talagi walk out of the club within a 12 month period. What becomes more apparent like Mutts mentioned is we don't seemingly have a well rounded R and R strategy.
This is why I say players are needed yes but a genuine experienced CEO and more credible GM of Football is where we need to go first. But we won't so we'll continue to spin our wheels.
But theres a key difference, even if the R&R had the ability to make an offer worth staying for, would they? Correct me if im wrong, Talagi was offered more at Parra and still turned the Eels down.
Not defending the office, far from it - they have more to answer for but until they have left, we will forever be in this frustratingly repetitive situation
The allure of playing and staying wasn't enough it seems this has to change.
Agreed. But that has to begin at an organisational level, not just the football department.
when staff turnover is like a revolving door, it is never a good sign of stability
Well he was offered a path at least, maybe not in the position he wanted but guarenteed FG week in week out. Penrith there was never certainty of starting straight away.
Not sure who offered more in financials though.
We could have but Melbourne is a unique example that many have tried to emulate and failed to do so, maybe that is us again with Ryles. Penrith for a little bit of time had that pull but even their juniors decided to move on for opportunities. Only reason it is not mentioned is they had juniors to cover the ones who left.
Melbourne keep Pezet but it is also with a plan in sight with Hughes for example off-contract the following year when re-signing. With a clause allowing him to leave if Hughes extends. It is a plan. We could have done that but Brown and Moses were extended already by the time Canberra came knocking.
DB was a poor decision in hindsight with the clauses, that is on us but if you ask Parramatta this time last year and even Brown himself i bet you would get the feeling he wouldn't be leaving and i think he wouldn't have if not being given up to nearly $500k more than what he is actually worth, a deal so bad that Parra shouldn't have matched and thankfully didn't. Had they lost Brown with him being off-contract with no options and losing Sanders too? Yeah that is ridiculous. But the club would have felt, as they should have, Brown would be here. Sanders could have felt the same and didn't want to wait around to see in case he does when given an opportunity earlier.
Your last part is spot on though, i am not defending them as a whole as i feel we cannot grow further with MON and the like making decisions. We should have a new GM and perhaps get someone like Brian Smith as another person in there like an advisor. Two extra footy people in there assisting and making decisions they know can work.
It has always been talked about as a pipe dream but the prime example is the right one in Matt Cameron. Someone who knows how to get success as he has achieved it so often he can lead us to say do this and not this. Ryles has seen success too but cannot do it himself nor is he allowed to do it himself.
We will have a massive warchest in 2026, or if we prefer give one year deals and give some of the cash this year to players at the club and have same amount plus Paulo's coin for 2027. That alone should attract good to decent to even great GM's to the club to get their hands on that to do things their way. Imagine that for a new GM, no gritting of teeth having to free up money and players to get what you feel you need to get starter, it is there ready to go for them. But we are giving MON that chance to do it?
We needed a rebuild and we felt BA shouldn't be in charge of it, well neither should MON. Done some good things, particularly with a few moneyball signings with players on potential but now we have cap space we should not be doing that. That philosophy is for the poor looking at getting an advantage.
Plus we need a dickhead upstairs, someone who would tell Galvin where to stick it once he rang up to say he was going to Canterbury. Imagine what Politis would have said, not as nice as what i said. But we would have bit our tongue and said it's all good we understand. If you burn bridges so be it, but we are allowed to be push overs i hope Ryles is not indoctrinated into their beliefs and accepts it.
LB a lot of us feel your wrong. You might be making too many assumptions in regards to Sanders. Some good footy minds actually see what went wrong at retention level.
At the end of the day surely you can accept that Sanders was basing his future on flawed beliefs. ie his path was blocked by long term contracts. Recruitment and retention had all the information about the contracts and the possible paths and they fucked it up totally. Do you think they told Sanders Mitch and Dylan had get out clauses.
Why can't fans be pissed off that recruitment and retention stuffed this up re Sanders completely, and express our displeasure about the way we lost the u19 origin captain and half, after developing him for so long.
I'd suggest the club is very much to Blame for losing such a promising youngster.
