                • Fair point JC. Do i think Holbrook should have won it? If i voted i would have given it to him. But i am also not losing my mind on Webster either.

                  • Would you have given it to Holbrook if you were asked after the regular season ended?, it's easy to give it to him now that they are in the gf.

If Holbrook won it i would be ok with that decision but to be honest I don't give to much attention to the award because I don't rate it.

My intent was to point out that going from the wooden spoon to 7th wasn't as impressive as it seems because the knights didn't have a bad roster last year, they had a bad coach plus their roster was stronger this year than last.

Remember those tigers teams that won 3 spoons in a row, or was it 4?, if any coach took one of those teams from spoon to 7th than that would be a massive achievement.

                    • Yeah i would have. Going from where they were, being so bad in 2025, to getting to top 8, despite losing Brown and Lucas before finals too. Plus no Mooney for the back half too.

                    • I can't say for sure I would have but he would have been in a very short list.

I'm not taking injuries into consideration seeing that ryles isn't getting the benefit of the worst injury toll probably ever, the knights had lost less than half the games through injury than the eels. Was Brown a loss?, they have a better win record without him. Sandon is all they needed, you could argue that if Brown didn't get injured smith wouldn't have played the role that got them into the gf. Lucas was a loss but they have 3 edge forwards that are top shelf and a 4th in Cant that would be a starter at a lot of clubs. Mooney was the loss that had the biggest impact.

                    • Well that's good coaching that led to Smith playing how he did as well. Plus saying they have so many good edges, three others who each have under 30 games experience, again great coaching.

You can take injuries into account and what the coach did to deal with the injuries.

              • The fact this is the first time Nathan cleary has won shows what a farce the dally m's are.

                • Yes and no, issue with Cleary is there were seasons where he missed a lot of games so he couldn't get points. Also, Edwards and Yeo and the likes would take points off him too.

                  • That is where it is flawed, the fact other players take points off him. Ponga won it because he was the only player at the knights consistently getting points. The 3,2,1 system is flawed, every player should get a rating out of 10 for every game, the player with the highest tally at the end wins.

                    • It's not a flaw, it's just how MVP awards work in team sports. The Dally M's measures who dominated that specific match, not who the best overall player is. If Cleary shares the load with two other origin stars who were just as good in an 80 minute window, he shouldn’t automatically get top votes just because of his name.

Rating every player out of 10 creates a different mess. Judges default everyone to a 6 or 7, turning it into an attendance award where a solid 7/10 player who plays every week beats a 9.5/10 match-winner who missed a month injured. Plus what if Penrith beat a team by 30, Edwards get 10 but Cleary 9, arguments would be it should be other way around and later it is why did this judge only give Cleary an 8 for this game.

If you have to rate 1-10 of every player in every game, by mid year those who judge will be so over it alot of the ratings will be the 6-7 average. With 3, 2, 1's, though not perfect, at least it narrows the judges thinking of the players to pick.

                    • If it's not flawed why is there a blow up about some winners every year?.

Rating every player gives every player a fair chance to get a score they deserve.  Rugby league week use to do it this way.

Edit. What do you mean its not for the best player overall, that's exactly what it is.
