Hi all , Boomer post incoming .
I have 2 tech queries and I'm going to roll them both into one thread . Here it goes .
* question 1 - The laptop debate .
So it's widely accepted as correct that IPhone users are far more superior than Android as is the Apple device . However , can someone please tell me the differences between a Mac and a Windows system ? We've had all sorts of windows laptops and I've managed to stuff them all even with the limited use you'd expect a household full of iPads to have for a clunky laptop with the dogs breakfast of a windows applications set up our last one had/has .
Do Macs operate with similar speed as an iPad ? Do you need virus protection and all the other bullshit you need for a windows device ? Are all apps mostly the usual extortion Apple paid subscription type set up ? How are they for using non Apple products with them ( will touch more on this in query #2) ? And lastly what can they do that non Apple operating devices can't ?
Just trying to decide whether it's worth giving one its forever home or not as wifeys been saying she wants a laptop for shopping and the daughters been saying she needs one for school work ( again , will touch on the real reason in query #2)
**question 2 - Camcorders for youtube and all that shit
The daughters addicted to YouTubing and all that shit . She has been for ages and now after watching some recently she's actually getting a bit of interest and talent in editing . Are camcorders still a thing ? Just want a cheap one however one that she's able to opload and edit on . What's the technology these days ? Are they still camcorders ? What do they need ? Wifi ? Bluetooth ? Any advice to prevent me from being the victim of a over anxious salesman looking to give his bottom line a boost would be muchly appreciated . As the kids are going to be locked in for the near future I'll be heading out to buy some toys .

Have iPhone and iPad but still prefer a windows laptop. Don't think there is a lot of difference. There are viruses targeting apple now. You could consider an advanced tablet instead of a laptop.
Best to stick with what you know. Windows pay upfront for software, Apple pay as you go and forever wanting more payments for updates.
You can buy a cheap 2nd hand cam corder, try that before lashing out on a new one.
What are you talking about? Apple updates are free. Though I avoid them unless I really need them. i.e. if ain't broke, don't fix it. Programs that are paid on a monthly basis, are the same on both systems, Adobe etc.
HA ! , I have no idea , what do people record long holiday clips and stuff on ?
Old fart solution Wiz.
This is in my wheel house. So I'll break it up into some sections:
Apple vs Windows
Apple is generally plug and play. You boot it up, it works and off you go. An actual Mac computer is going to be faster than an iPad as it is built to function as a computer. Your iPad essentially has slightly more computing power than a phone. Apple hardware (phones, computers etc.) and software (operating systems, programs etc.) are generally stock standard. They don't allow for much personalisation and don't like to work with anything other than Apple products. Windows and Android products on the other hand work with each other. I previously had a Samsung phone and switched to a Google Pixel, I transferred all my data with a single cable and had no compatibility issues.
Apple has its own versions of Microsoft Office, it is a little different but you can work it out if you know how to use Office. Macs are known for the quality of their video and photo editing capabilities. Windows are more for your gamers.
The biggest difference is price. Mac is top of the line and you literally pay for having the little Apple logo. Whereas you can get a good quality Dell, Asus or HP computer for about half the price of a Mac.
Camcorders and editing
So your daughter wants a camera. It honestly depends on what she wants to shoot. Is she shooting vlogs, movement etc? You don't want a camcorder as they either don't take photos or their photos are terrible. The last thing you want is to buy her two cameras. Go for a digital camera that both shoots video and images. They generally don't need Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Most still use an SD card to store content on that you can stick into a laptop.
In terms of editing software. I would recommend Lightworks if you don't want to fork out on Adobe's editing suite which is prohibitively expensive. Lightworks is free. Apple computers also come with iMovie which you can do plenty with.
For your wife, literally any laptop that works is going to be able to do online shopping these days. Don't need anything fancy for that.
Hahaha in your wheelhouse.....
Every topic on here is in your wheelhouse Super....
My two cents.
Apple - Nazis of the tech industry designed to make you buy more of their shit. That's why I avoid them.
Oh I heavily dislike Apple. Their entire ecosystem is built to ensure you spend all of their money with them. And their products are heavily overpriced.
Wiz, personally I prefer Mac. Realistically it is what I have always used at work and I personally find them more user friendly.
In regards to cameras, forget about camcorders and I would probably look at the Mirrorless range of cameras. Without knowing a price range it is hard to recommend anything. Do your research online before buying anywhere. I recently purchased a new camera through Digi Direct. They are online and have shopfronts in Sydney as well. There is also Georges Cameras. They are online and also have a shopfront in Sydney. Just be careful of buying from JB Hifi or Harvey Norman for example, without doing your research. They can be expensive.
A good site I use to see user reviews is- B&H Photo. This is a huge store in the USA. They usually have plenty of user reviews for whatever you are after.
Wiz you are in luck, it just so happens I do not have a freeking clue so will not be contributing further.
Bet that made your day - AY?
