  • Silly mistake cost us tonight

    Yes we need a prop a centre a 5,8

  • Joash will be our 6. He looks like a 6 when linking with our outside backs. Good pass both sides and creates space.  Hawkins to remain in the squad for depth. Joash will get better every week and I applaud Ryles for giving him game time over DB to learn. Next year guys, next year.

    • I am not 100% sure Joash will be our 6. If he was i would think Ryles stays stubborn to leave him there and play someone else at 1 for Iongi. If he is adament of giving Joash playing time at 6 for next year as he is guarenteed to be our 6 for 2026, you leave him there for next 4 weeks.

If Pezet is open to going, we will try and get him. Same if Campbell is available. But Ryles will be picky and if none of the ones he wants he is able to get then he will persevere with Papali'i.

      • Yeah I reckon the thinking is that we buy in a 5/8, if one becomes available. I don't think Hawkins quite has it at the moment, but by playing Joash at fullback gives him some free rein in attack, which could be handy in his development. Will we see him switch back to 5/8 before the end of the year? That would be telling.

  • Easy to be critical of the team and the performance of individuals. We are in transistion from a stale, putrid BA inspired era to a progressive approach from JR. First game of the season we were smashed 56-18 by the Storm. Last night with just a dash of patience we could have beaten them. A bitter experience like last night will make them more understanding 7of the requirments.

As dissapointed I am at the loss, I am delighted at the progress. We have a number of youngsters now that have been ito the first team and are genuine first graders- Smith,TDS. Papalili, Tuitavi, Samrani and more to come.

Sometimes fellow supporters  we have to realise where we were and how quickly we are progressing. Wake up and smell the roses

    • Good comment Eelovution .We have a young side coming into a new coaching environment up against very established clubs with SOO class mature origin players.  Expectations need to be real

      • X3 - great comment.

These frustrating losses have come against 3 of the Top 4, and Penrith, over the past 5-6 weeks, and we obviously beat a 5th/6th(?) placed Broncos.

The Eels would not look out of place in 5th - 8th place right now going off form.

Commentators are finally clueing onto what most of us here saw months ago. Brandy & Voss mentioned the Eels are the team outside the 8 no opposition will want to play. Thats a pretty glaring testament to the progress.

Ryles said in the presser, the Storm having 'been doing that for 20 years, we've been doing it for 20 weeks', and they won by 6 off the back of an 8-foot tall winger.

If we needed anymore proof of what is a phenomenal turnaround by a rookie coach in his first season, the last two weeks are it.

If you go back & watch us play the Dolphins last year in Darwin, watch the difference in mindset, effort areas & defence. It’s not the same club.

2026 will be a different story.

        • Great perspective NoS. While players could have excuted better in key moments, this should also be expected given the stage we are off a rebuild.

          • Im frustrated too EA, the errors, and the execution of moments as you said, are so demotivating... I also can't stand losing to Melbourne, but, it was Melbourne, a team full of experience at every level, with a coach who has done it all and been there since 1921.

For every moment the Eels blew last night, there were also key moments they won - Dylan Walker had a few that were huge & our defence, line speed & contact, forced errors (uncharacteristic) for the Storm, also.

Ryles is building something bigger than 2025, he is drilling in foundations, physical & mental, and when these lessons & experience decrease errors & increase confidence in players, in combinations, and even in the coaching staff who are being validated in their direction, this team could easily be Top 4 bound (with some additions)…

...and this time, it might be with a premiership capable defence that is proving they can turn up weekly, and an attack capable of evolving during games - both are invaluable assets this club has not had in over a decade.

Losing sucks, especially in games that were winnable, but blaming individuals in an 80minute game that has literally hundreds of key moments, is short-sighted & we can guarantee Ryles won’t be doing similar.

Im buying in EA, its naive, its crazy, and we've all been here before, but fk it, I’ve seen enough to entrust hope to Ryles & what he is showing.

            • Just look deeply into the team we fielded out.

              • Papalii second ever game at fullback in the NRL. Hawkins or TDS second time they have played with Moses. So really the only combination in the spine was Smith and Hawkins who still have only played minimal games together. Ones a backup and the other is a rookie as well between those 2.
              • Our backrowers have barely played there this year, espically with the halves they were next too.
              • Penisni & Lomax have barely played together.
              • Only Russel & JAC have played majority of the season together. The fact this is JAC first season at eels and they are probably the pair that have the most experience in the team playing with each other speaks volume.
              • We played without our first chocie fullback, 5/8 (2 spine members) and backrower. Plus many players returning to the team.

Once this team is finally able to get consistency in the team selection, I cannot wait to see the improvement between:

              • the spine (marquee player barely fit this year)
              • forwards (given their ball playing skills to play short with the other forward running hard lines)
              • edge combinations (able to utlitse Fox speed more)
              • halves with their backrowers (one of Moses strength when you think of ICE).

Currently, players like Doorey, Russel & Guymer who are not in our best line up for 2026 are getting valuable game time and will be pushing for a spot next year.
