  • SPOILER ALERT

I find it very interesting sterlo didn’t have hayne in his top 6 nominees for best fullback. Little bit gobsmacked honestly.

    • He assumes Thornett will get the nod there and wants Hayne in the team, so nomines him as a winger? Guru snr will get one wing spot, Hayne the other? Competition would only be Semi?

        • Yeah but Sterlo said he wasn't going to nominate players in more than one position, but the bench players will come from any player he has nominated. If he was going to pick Hayne on the bench he could've nominated him in the fullback category, picked Thornett and then put Hayne on the bench. By not nominating Hayne for fullback he has either nominated him for another position, most likely wing, or is going to ignore entirely for non football reasons.

        • A bit harsh early Poppa. I'm with Brett. I think Hayne makes the side at wing. His defence at fullback was questionable regardless of his awesome talent.

If Sterlo doesn't include him as a winger then I too will harpoon him.

            • You make a good argument for Hayne as a centre Poppa, for mine Grothe Senior is first winger picked and the Crow the first centre.

That leaves the problem of where Hayne goes.  He must make the side in my opinion but at whose expense, Semi or Ella?

With the power and ability of the outside back I love Ellas Zip and speed to create havoc through the middle.

                • Ella would make a good 14 in any eels best of teams, people forget he was the starting 5/8 at the start if the 1981 season before switching with Kenny mid season and they would often switch during games from time to time, he also played origin as a bench utility.

              • I'd be shocked if Sterlo picked him in the centres. Even just looking at players that I've seen, (going back to 1980), I couldn't put Jarryd in our top 6 centres. They would be for mine Jamie Lyon, Steve Ella, Mick Cronin, Timana Tahu, Ben Smith & Michael Jennings, I'd probably have Krisnan Inu, Dave Vaeliki & Mick Buettner ahead of him as well. That's not to say he couldn't have been a great centre for us, he just didn't play there for us very much. Michael Hagan tried to play him there initially in 07 and it wasn't exactly an unqualified success.

If he's not at fullback then he'd have to pick him on the wing.

  • Time will tell surely hayne had to be in there somewhere

  • Following on from Hindy's team, now Sterlo's musings - you have to think that blokes that bled for the Blue and Gold must have had some issue with Hayne.

We know he was a total show pony and seemingly wasn't a 'team player' - his coaches have hinted as much. But, the bloke was the most skillful weapon this club has had behind Brett Kenny. That's a no brainer!

The old blokes on this forum will tell you about Ken Thornett, but, come on, let's be fair! Those blokes couldn't hold a candle to the modern day player! And for good reason! They had to go to work of a day! The modern day player gets to spend his day in the gym, in the pool, on the paddock and retire to the PlayStation!

We might find it somewhat romantic that the Crow ran a pub and Pricey used to drive a delivery truck, but, because those blokes spent 1/10th of their time outside of the modern club environment, with all of benefits that come with that, they just won't cut it with the modern footballer!

Sterlo could kick to the seagulls like none other. Sticky had a an amazing left to right pass. Alf could grubber the ball behind the opposing forwards better than anyone. You can't teach that!

But, none of those blokes could do what Benji did in 2005. None of those blokes could do what Jarryd did in 2009. None of those blokes could do what Joey or JT did throughout their career!

It's not a knock on them. It's just a function of progress.

The fact that so many good judges leave Hayne out of the conversation suggests to me that they judge him more on his character and less on his characteristics.

I'm of the view that if Hayne was coached by a better 'man manager', a father figure, in the mould of a Wayne Bennett, rather than through the various styles of Brian Smith, Jason Taylor, Michael Hagan, Daniel Anderson, Steven Kearney, Ricky Stuart or Brad Arthur, he may have become the next immortal. And that's not a knock on those coaches! The club really tried to build itself around Jarryd and it didn't work, despite those coaches' best efforts. History will judge Jarryd way more poorly than the coaches that tried their best to harness his potential!

That said, he was such an incredible talent! He could have been front and centre in an Eels dynasty!

    Pity.

    • Very very well put bourbon, hit the nail on the head
