We have a poster on here JC who wrote some intriguing comments on touch football techniques, the power and speed aspects of our forwards in the game, and the effect that power running backs add to that equation. He dived into some techniques used in other rugby type sports especially touch football; an interesting discussion point.

JC, thanks for that explanation you make a lot of sense with what you say and the "touch" analogy is interesting.

Realalistically I have no real idea of how that game has evolved to the state you imply. I assume similar principles must exist in Rugby Sevens and League. Could I invite you to explain what happens in these other sports that maybe of interest to everyone.

You could possibly put a blog together based on your equations re big/medium/power and speed, both small and large player.

General athleticism is something that doesn't seem to be emerging through our juniors and people like me try to see football skills, and combinations of both ideally. However, we don't seem to have enough power and speed.

Dylan Brown as a case in point has a combination of both, but is not a big man.  Ryley Smith brings down big forwards, is skilful with the ball but lacking in running power. You could write up our whole team with respect of this type of analysis.

I also question whether our players should be doing more touch football training in the pure sense of what you explain. Areobic strength definately invites its way into this brief.

I think you could also wind in Hoey's "dead zone" philosophies into that as well and it would be very enlightening to IEE readers and anyone else that is smart enough to understand.

I am thinking not enough thought is being given to these "philosophies" in change, Hoey is the only one that has driven a systemic approach to the idendification i.e the diagnosis is there, just not the cure or the fix! Daz and Coryn have also gone down comparative paths as well.

I haven't gone into much detail here but I specifically invite the contributers mentioned to maybe explain this whole aspect further.

Forget this is my blog. I am happy for anyone to take it over and maybe we will all understand better.

  • It's funny when you look at Penrith sides over the last 5 years they haven't really had any speedsters. They are usually strong, powerful and athletic but not particularly quick

    • Yes, I have noticed that as well, but some would say quick enough not withstanding...LOL

Parra has always seemed to play well against them for those reasons, against some of the other sides, we have never had speed to match them. I think a strong argument now is we have speed with JAC and TDS through the ruck and of course with Illongi when he is back.....Joash has speed but limited power, maybe no power. Moses lacks power as well. Jack Williams has shown, probably more last season that he can make 40 metre breaks. Some of the edge forwards in other sides can seemingly go the length. Again DB shows up by us losing that penetration from the edge by his running of edges like Lane (when he was firing). In saying that Volkman in that last game shown very good pace. I remember Richard Jackson pointing that out on one of his Reserve Grade performances......he is developing and that's encouraging out of our current very "injury structured" side. Pezet obviously adds nothing to this side, if and when he comes back. Matter of fact if Pezet was playing as well as Volk, we would probably saying much kinder things about him.

      • Penrith don't really score long range tries but they are the absolute best at scoring off the play after a line break or 2 plays after. Volk has impressed me since coming in. Got some issues in defence but what young half coming into 1st grade doesn't. He knows the 6 role better than Pezet but I think he's benefited from playing a lot of 7 over the last 2 years. He certainly has nice touch, tidy kicking game and good vision. I assume they will resign him or do you think he sniffs opportunities elsewhere? I just wonder where that leaves this whizz kid Lorenzo that everyone rates

  • I think with the introduction of the new rules, dominating possession is a must, and that means less risky offloads and more power runs. Jason Taumoulolo is a good example his best year

Bigger more powerful forwards like Mataele who just runs it hard and straight are more in, and he must be athletic and good laterally in d

The quick little men like jai gray and drinkwater are finding more space so they are crucial.

Super quick centres who can take advantage of the space are also crucial,  just like Staggs and is also very good in coverage

The one body type who i think the new rules disadvantage is the slower forward, with low leg speed.   We have one currently in fg but I can only put his initials as I don't want to cop another flogging for mentiong his name - cg Blake Lawrie another.  Players like Gutherson who's lost a little pace are also becoming defunct

You need speed, power,  less ball play and stamina in D.

I also think Samrani can become a very good back rower, being powerful and having good agility in defence.  He's one im really looking forward to seeing in the eels jersey for tge next 5 years

    • I wonder if we could find a way to utilise JACs speed in the middle somewhere. Not full time just a bit of licence to roam and sit on Volk or Mitch's hip.

I think you're being a little tough on CG. There's a player there. You also have to remember he's been all over the place from centre to back row to middle. For a young bloke that's a tough education. I think you'll find CG play better once his role is more defined
People were saying the same about Jurbo earlier in the year and he's going great now (same body type)
