Shaun Lane Announces Retirement from NRL

The Parramatta Eels can confirm that Shaun Lane has made the decision to retire from the NRL marking the end of an outstanding playing career and the beginning of a new chapter within the club.

While Lane remains contracted for the remainder of the 2025 season, he has accepted a new role within the club’s Elite Pathways and NRLW programs, focusing on mental skills and athlete wellness.

Lane’s decision reflects a natural transition into life beyond the game, where he will continue to make a positive impact on the next generation of Eels players.

Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill praised Shaun’s contributions to the club, both on and off the field.

“Shaun has been a wonderful ambassador for the Parramatta Eels. He carries himself with humility, integrity, and professionalism, and he’s been an exceptional role model for younger players,” O’Neill said. “We’re proud to see him step into this important new role, where his leadership and passion for player welfare will continue to make a difference.”

Shaun joined the Eels in 2019 and quickly established himself as a vital member of the team. His on-field leadership and consistency were pivotal to the club’s success, including being a key contributor in the Eels' 2022 NRL Grand Final side.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time playing for the Eels,” Lane said. “This club means a lot to me, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the relationships I’ve built here. I’m really thankful to the fans for their unwavering support throughout my career—it’s meant the world to me.

“I’m now looking forward to continuing my career at Parramatta in a different capacity, helping our young athletes thrive on and off the field.”

While playing NRL, Lane had already reached significant educational milestones, completing a Bachelor of Health Sciences, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology, and is currently working towards a Master’s in Positive Psychology.

The Parramatta Eels thank Shaun for his continued service to the club and look forward to supporting him in his transition from player to mentor.

      • He was also older , had been injured , and I don't remember too many clubs throwing money at him.  $500k would seem about on the money for Lane.  Not saying it's correct , but if someone asked me what Lane was on yesterday , I'd have said about 500k would be my assumption.

    • Might be one of the best rebuilds I've seen from a club, clearing out a heap of players who aren't fitting into the system and will be armed with a good chunk of money. Patience is a smart move for now not sure who Will become available once the offseason hits and need to be ready to pounce. Something definitely brewing in the background

  • Thank you for your time in the Eels playing squad Shaun and I am sure you will be great in your new role.

As for new signings, I hear Bunty Afoa and Morgan Harper are available 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • People are saying Koloamatangi or Dave Fifita. With the money we have now we could honestly get both without shooting oursellves in the foot.

    IMAGINE!

    8. Hopgood

    9. Smith

    10. Koloamatangi

    11. Fifita

    12. Williams

    13. De Belin/Walker

    14. Da Silva

    15. Jnr Paulo

    16. Kautoga

    17. Moretti

  • Walker has to be in the side - his link work has been a big of our resurgence

  • Had some great moments in an Eels jumper but we never got to see what could have been with lane.

If we used him correctly he would have been devastating on the opposition tryline.

The poor bugger was often asked to catch hospital passes in traffic, his hands weren't his strong point.

That busted jaw from such passes ultimately affected the rest of his career .

How we didn't effectively isolate halves  on the try line with him running a line targeting them constantly is beyond me.

Good luck with the rest of your life Shaun , sounds like your set up for a career outside football destined for success.

  • So that more money we cant spead on players like Tray Mooney no one wants to come

David Fifita looks like going to South with a big 3rd party deal

    • It's really difficult to say who is actually available. Lot of players could be we don't even know or hear about.

  • 2022 memories won't be forgotten!

That left edge combo of him, Brown and Sivo!

  • Good luck to you Shaun, been a good player and hope you thrive in your new roll. On another note it looks like according to zero tackle we are interested in Siliva Havilli ! what are peoples thought on the 32 yr old.
