We need to be "realistic", Jason Ryles conceded yesterday.
He added it's not just the injury crisis but also having "eight guys at any one time with under 20 games".
Using 28 players already, the most in the game, doesn't help either.
"That's just where they're at in the career. Inconsistencies are all part of the learning process."
"The consistency will come over time," Ryles concluded.

"Possession is King"

Hold the ball. In this era, it’s the difference between being in the game and being blown off the park.
Last week showed it against Manly.
15–9 errors. Game over.
Even the Panthers lost 32–16 with a 15–8 error count.
Manly had 80% possession for 20 minutes. Five errors. Two restarts. A penalty. A sin-bin. Three tries in thirteen minutes.
It doesn’t take long.
The same thing happened to the Panthers. The Dolphins had 70% possession for 20-minutes. Four tries in fifteen minutes.
"Defences don’t stand a chance", in the Restart Era. Gus Gould told us that in this weel's latest Six Tackles podcast.
We also fell away in other fundaments. The Eels were in it 7-6 at halftime and kicked for almost 500m. But, we fell away in the second half and kicked for only 240m.
It also applies to the Warriors.
The only two games the Warriors have lost is when they lost completions, didn't win the error count, and the opposition kicked over 600m.
Sometimes stats tell the brutal truth.
But pressure with and without the ball creates errors.
Inexperience and combinations without game reps is another factor.
Many fans believe it's less about grit and the fundamentals and more about recruiting a bevvy of star players. Sack enough people. Sexy sales' pitches. Better players. Wallah. Job done. Who said magic bullets don't exist?
Ryles again went on the reaslism route here again.
"Recruitment is one of the hardest spaces in the game if not the hardest," he admitted.
History backs Ryles' realism over magic bullets.
The boring basics apply even to the best rosters in the game.
In the last twenty years only two grand-finalists have had worse completions in the game than the runners up.
Let's look closer at the two outliers to understand how they overcome the total game stats. The 2016 Sharks (90% v 91%) and the 2013 Roosters. But teams lost overall completions in the game, but won completions and held ball better in the last 30 minutes –when it counted – to win.
Jack De Belin, the 250-plus gamer, also keeps it simple.
He admitted Ryles has asked for more aggression and intent.
"You don't need to be the most skillful or the best. As long as you turn up with a good attitude and have a lot of intent with what you do, especially as a forward, you can get the job done, week in, week out."
"For us (defence), it's an attitude thing. We just need to become switched on and bring it physically. And you can match it with anyone on any day," he told us yesterday.
Belief. Many Fans won't have it. Punters won't. But the team has to have it.
Last word
Can the Eels step off the rollercoaster and fight for three straight weeks? It would be the first time this year.
The Warriors are building something steadier. But even they haven’t escaped the wobble either.
It’s not just about effort and grit. It’s about doing the fundamentals better.
If they don’t, history already tells us what happens.

Like if you look tonight you can see the difference in athleticism and explosive power.
We are built to finesse teams and don't can't go through the middle of teams.Our little men and out game isn't built to take on tiring teams in the middle of the park.On the flipside because we are piss weak in the middle of the park we can get run threw run over or just be beaten with little men also.
I mean I look at Vaimoga off the back fence tonight which one of our middles run like that none of them run like that or Erin Clarke's run pass selection the difference between him and Walkers game is physicality and that's what's missing from JRs team he's built so far the distinct lack of physicality on the edge and in the middle.If Parra's youngsters don't have the explosive physical element to there game they aren't making it in the nrl especially the fowards.
Right now injuries regardless our back 5 is an embarrassment.
Ha actually missing only Iongi..but compared to every other side in comp you'd swear we were pretty much missing a complete back line.
not a single one of them hits it up on first from kick off with any venom or conviction at all and esp today. Lomax has been the only player we've had do thst well... in years!!

We are not big enough fast enough and skilled enough
Very very simple we are too small of a side, these six agains are killing us. Playing with heart doesn't win you games.
Between the injury toll and error rate we just aren't going to win many games. Effort was decent but just don't have enough nrl level players on the field. Same as strom who have lost 7 in a row lol.
Some observations from tonight:
- The lack of focus and handling errors is really what cost us. We were well prepared but players lost focus in crucial moments. Mentality is not there and not enough experience.
- The outisde backs apart from Fox. Handling errors, falling asleep, random offloads, but can pull something out of nothing. We can only afford one of Kelly and Penisini. Despite their yardage, we need a steady eddy like Samrani there. If Twidle is alright I'd consider him for the wing. Even better, Russell RW and Nanva next to Fox once he's eligible is what I'd do. We need signings here, no question.
- Moretti has been disappointing. Some good carries, but really swtiched off in defence and doesn't have the energy and stamina for first grade it seems. Someone like Pryke, less experienced and did make errors, but has the physicality for the NRL more IMO. I'd drop Moretti next game for Teancum or Mataele.
- Man we miss Iongi. We really miss the guile and passing of Iongi at the back of shape. Joash is a goer but doesn't have the kicking game, sharp passing or trickery of Iongi. We miss more edge from our spine, and it's why I was really considering Pezet back because despite his unsuitedness for 6 he does provide something extra. But Volkman is doing well there and I think Lorenzo should debut soon. But at fullback we need more than what Joash is giving.
- Dylan Walker needs forward pack that's making metres ahead of him. He doesn't have to play all the time. I felt getting Teancum today in would have been more useful.
- Ryles set us up well. We were up for it. We put in a good fight. We need better players. That is all really.
