Poppas Corner: Origin Blindness

How can anyone say that the half back that has led his side to 4 straight grandfinal wins and one of them almost single handedly cannot play Origin Football.

Up until last night he had played 16 games witha 50% win record. He doesn't need  to be defended as the best player in the world (I am no Cleary fan as a person) his record proves he is. His coaches for NSW (forget last year he was out) have been pretty ordinary and Meninga at a National level does/did him no service.

It can only be dumb Parramatta fans that would always blame the half back when the forwards provide no platform.

The answer is simple Laurie Daley was completely out of his depth. He coached this side from world beaters in round 1 to nothings in round 3. He just does not get how the modern game has changed since he played. That's a reflection on him and the NSW process, not the game.

His interchange use last night was disgraceful, his understanding of how the game would be refereed was also total naiveity. Klein managed the game in round 2 and now come round 3 just left the game to its own devices. Qld played with lightening play the balls and laid all over the NSW ruck, basically discounting any play the ball speed NSW could garner. They finally woke up to that in the last 20 minutes and guess what, they were pretty even through that period.

Get over it, I'm a NSW supporter and we were completely outsmarted and out coached.

      • Yep I wish it was not so,

    • Some of my friends are voicing similar feelings Bluey.

I think I have an answer, when flogging sailors on the ship, the captain decided that when corporal punishment was required that 20 lashes were not enough. Once he increased them to 50 lashes there was a general perception that the extra pain was required to appreciate the circumstances better.

Can I suggested that your wife goes out and gets a new whipping post and leather belt....when she feels better after administering the extra flogging you will in turn feel like watching football and Parra is not so bad afterall!

      • Mate you wouldn't get me out of the dungeon, i'd be lost to footy forever hahaaha

  • Reminded me of a BA game plan. Hit it up for 5, then go the bomb. There was very little introduced in attack to put doubt in the QLD defensive line. So they rushed up all game, hit each forward with 3 tacklers, slowed the ruck and had a high completion rate. This is not a masterstroke, this is just basic footy game smarts in an even matched game. The difference is when you seize those small moments that happen in Origin, which QLD did, and we basically had very few.

They executed a game plan very well and didn't lose focus for pretty much the entire game. They nullified our biggest attacking threats in Cleary and Lomax. Critter just didn't get any good ball. Definitely out coached and I didn't agree with some of the selection decisions in the forwards. I'm still to be convinced Utoikamanu is anything special, even now playing at the Storm. We didn't replace Barnett like for like.

They played a lot better and I can't say I was overly impressed how NSW played. For me, a somewhat boring game, given I have seen this script play out so many times in the last 40 freakin years.

    • That is not a BA game plan. Watch our game against the Dragons 2 weeks ago and you will see that was our game plan. Have a look at the Super league result from the weekend with the Rhinos betting Hull the top team. Tell me from this BA is not a good coach. Under BA we regularily were the top team for off loads with Cartwright, Paulo and Matterson heading the list. Time to stop bagging BA and realise he took what was a pretty ordinary side to a grand final. What we are still showing is our lack of ability as a club to sign big name match winning players even with a new coach.

      • BA is a good coach, but the 2022 team, though a fluke getting to the GF, was still a pretty good team on paper.

BA just didn't evolve his game to where it needed to be. Moving aware is great for him but at the same time do not take SL with too much salt in comparisons. Though he is doing well and his style suits SL.

        • This is not about BA, if i wanted an opinion on BA I would have addressed it to Chiefy for an unbiased view Lol

        • BA is one of the worst coaches in modern history.  He even thought his son was the next Eels halfback in waiting, yet he's been axed from 2 clubs.

If any club ever hires this guy again,  they have shit for brains.
