Since Mark O’Neill joined Parramatta in 2019, the club’s junior development output has fallen well short of expectations, with very few genuine NRL-standard players progressing from the system into the top 17. Despite strong junior pathways on paper, the transition from development squads to consistent first-grade performers has been limited, leaving the club increasingly dependent on external recruitment to fill key roster spots.
The main players to emerge in this period are Will Penisini, Sean Russell, Haze Dunster, Jake Arthur, Oregon Kaufusi, and CharlieGuymer. Outside of that small group, there has been little sustained production of long-term first-graders, raising serious questions about the direction and effectiveness of the club’s development strategy under O’Neill.
Developed players who have come through the system in nearly a decade under O'neill
Haze Dunster ( no longer here)
Will Penisini
Shaun Russell ( leaving)
Oregon Kaufusi ( no longer here)
Charlie Guymer
Saxon Pryke
Ryley Smith
Sam Tuivaiti
Blaze ( Panthers )
In summary in the 8 years O'neill has been football manager, Parramatta only have 3 regular first graders in 2027 that have come through under him Penasini - Smith- Tuivaiti. Guymer isn't a regular top 17 player
3 players! Compared to clubs like the Panthers its a disgraceful comparison. None of the players brought through are anything above your average player. Are we going to stand for this ? Our club should be brimming with developed talent whether the be Parramatta juniors or brought into the club's systems through flegg and reserve grade
There's no elite talent, there's no players pushing for Origin or higher rep duties, there's zero, Nada, zilch.
This is exactly why Parramatta is where we are today, a failing club relying on the desperation of signing elite outside talent which will require extreme over payments to get here - its just not going to happen.
For mine unless there are changes in the Eels hierarchy, get ready for another 5 years in the bottom half of the competition.

Didn't we win SG Ball in 23? There aren't too many that have kicked on out of that squad ...are there?
Sanders, Talagi, Tuivati are the better of the bunch with Pryke and Guymer as next best. The rest are reserve graders or worse.
If we can get 3 from each Ball squad that are good we will be doing well. Of course, there will be late bloomers but mostly count on only a handful from each squad.
Our big 3 at the moment are Koina, Talagi and Petrus. After that you have Bamblett, Bloomfield, Popo. Maybe more Ea would be better to interject.
I mean, from SG Ball, it's a pretty good turn out if you get 2-3 legitimate first graders per year.
The 2023 SG Ball side has Twidle, Talagi, Sanders, Tuivati, Arthur, Guymer, Pryke who have already played first grade. Plus Richie who's close. That's quite a haul.
That's the thing, being amazing in SG Ball just means you're more than likely capable of becoming a first grade player if you carry on improving. Not necessarily a great first grade player, that's another echelon again. Heaps of SG Ball superstars become "nothing special" NRL players.
Making the Top 30 of any squad is a huge achievement.
There's a reason they call great NRL players "once in a generation" talent.
yup
I think that's where you have to dig into a players character making FG is the starting line not the finishing line if a player thinks they've made it and exhales making a top 30 squad that's not the player we need.We need guys who are hungrier and want more.Is it an achievement making it yes but as mentioned it's the start of the journey not the end of one.
Think of it as climbing a mountain.FG is Basecamp not the summit.
Regardless who is responsible on the current and past situation of the team (MON, Sarantinos, BA, FO executives, coaches, physical, attack, defensive, etc), one thing is clear, this team have a very big problem with the way they have played and are playing in this competition. It is clear that there is something wrong. All teams have experienced the time of COVID but most if not all (Penrith, Broncos, Roosters and even Tigers), except the Eels, have improved, if not maintained, their competitiveness. As of now, unless a miracle happen, the team will never be a serious contender for the premiership. Is the Eels problem caused by a Who or a What?
Do the people managing the team knows what or who is the problem contributing to our dismal ranking in the previous years. And if they know what the proble is, have they found or identified the possible solutions to it that may improved our
