  • This sent shivers down my spine, the courage and the will to win from these legendary players is the stuff that should be shown to the current team.

They should also be more involved with the club, especially Sterlo.

    • It's not up to our legends of the 80s to be involved with the club. Many of them fought and bled for the club for a decade or more. They gave plenty, they won premierships. They don't owe the club anything.

Sterlo has been involved with the club. I believe he said in 2019 he was working with Brown and Moses in a consulting capacity.

But having our legends hanging around, in my opinion, puts unnecessary pressure on the current group. It becomes a millstone around our necks if we keep looking back. As Sterlo said at the end, it's up to the current players and staff to create their own legacy.

  • How many years now have been people saying that Sterlo should be more involved with the club? I reckon Kenny, Sterling, Price and Co should all have been more involved with the club years ago and maybe the Eels would have won a couple more premierships by now.

    • From memory Fitzgerald had alot to do with that not happening . I recall a comment from someone like Kenny / Grothe saying none of them felt welcome after they retired around the time Osborne took over but ........

This was an outstanding Doco i loved it , brought back great memories of an emotional day . Winning however losing Price & Crow along with Rabs who has been my idol couldnt believe he was punted at his peak for Rex who as was proven to be well past his best which was no where near Rabs to begin with  .

        • Chris the situation with Kenny and Sterlo since their retirements is a very interesting one. I remember Brett speaking out late in his career on different issues that Denis Fitzgerald didn't like who he did his best to silence him. Fitzgerald never looked after Bert when his playing days were over even though he was always willing to do anything he could for the club.

I remember Sterlo's father saying in an interview that he believed his son would be an even better coach than he was a player. Sterlo is a great communicator and was from the first time I saw him interviewed when he was playing for Fairfield Pats. So the commentary position on 9 allowed him to do what came naturally to him, talking about rugby league but without the fanatical commitment that's required of a first grade coach and the constant pressure that comes with it.

Maybe he felt that not committing himself to following a coaching career with the Eels didn't entitle him to take a position with the club that someone else who needed it more could fill. Fitzgerald didn't permit too many of the 80s playing legends to hold significant positions at the club so maybe Sterlo was offside with him. Or maybe, as you alluded to, the dream job at 9 was so good that he could play golf and go to the races whenever he wanted and just rock up and do his thing on the commentary team without turning a hair. Naturally, that was when he was younger, when he had some but as he got a bit older, got married and had family commitments while living on the Central Coast maybe it hasn't been feasible to take on any significant role with the club.

They were both club legends as players and top blokes as well so it would be good if both had roles at the club.

    • Johns is in the media and still helps at clubs. I'm sure a Kenny or a Sterlo would definitely prefer to be more involved with the current set up.

      • Johns is a dope who sit on a panel and has plenty of time on his hands.

Sterlo paid his dues on the field and owes the club nothing, also he lives on the northern beaches. He is not selfish at all, he is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

  • My takeaway was from Crow where he said that these days a club wouldn't be able to assemble such talent due to the salary cap.

I do agree with Sterlos assessment though - Ray Price WAS the greatest player we ever had.
Every fibre of his being was to win.
I would have liked to have seen him involved in the club but I fear his prickly nature would have offended some of the young kids.
Price, Sterlo, Taylor, Muggo, Bert , Zip, Guru and others ...Wow.
Hard to reconcile for us oldies that none of the current players at the Eels were even born in 1986 !!!!

  • It  was excellent. Those were the days
