Examples of second year syndrome are players who have played a most of, or a full, successful season in a given position, excelled at that position but then find it difficult the next year because opposition players have a better knowledge of how the player goes about his work.
Mortimer played five - eighth for half a season last year, coinciding with our late run.
However in my opinion he was not one of the major players in that run and he certainly wasn't doing the role asked of him this year - that is to guide parra around the park and provide direction and opportunity in attack.
From the evidence prevented this year he doesn't seem up to the task. The worrying thing is if it were true second year syndrome then we could say "well he has done it once, he will find a way to do it again'.
We can't say that about Mortimer. He may have already signed his biggest contract in footy.

Very true. I think one of the reasons he is struggling this year is because he is being asked to do something he doesn't have the ability for. If he was given a similar role to last year which was to just back up and be tenacious he might still go alright. I don't think leading a side around the park is suitable for him.
