Mortimer looks like staying an Eel

It was only last week that Peter Mortimer was hinting that Daniel Mortimer would not think of signing a contract until mid-way through next year and that a move to the Bulldogs was a distinct possibility. However, swept up in the euphoria of the Eel's march to the grand final both Daniel and his father have now spoken publicly that they're favouring signing a new deal with the Eels. The Daily Telegraph quoted Peter as saying: "We'll sit down with Paul in a week or so and have a general chat about where the club is headed. Naturally, with the emotions running high and Daniel playing so well, it makes you lean toward staying." It was a sentiment his son reaffirmed as well. "I couldn't be happier at the moment, so Parramatta is looking like the club for me. There's still a lot of things to consider and I don't want to rush into any decisions. "But I feel like I belong here more and that people now see me as a Parramatta player rather than Peter Mortimer's son," he said. • This is beginning to sound like a joke.
I am very aware that the Mortimer clan has its roots deeply buried within Canterbury, I've got that. But that was 80's
What is giving me the shits is where I read that Canterbury had the wrong culture so they came to Parra. That is a good thing, but they made the decision to come. Not come until things sorted itself out & now I want to go back. How is that teaching your son the right values in life.
Parra have nothing but jump over hoops to make Daniel feel welcome.
Daniel in turn has done far more then anyone expected. At such an early stage within his career.

How can there every be any hint of Daniel returning to the Dogs just because of daddy & his past. (Oh shit I forgot about his uncles)

Where is Daniels loyalty & team spirit.

I feel like Parramatta is just being used as a means to an end for Daniel to return to the dogs, once we have developed him. If there is no significant differences in $'s then I cannot see why Daniel would not stay, other then we were just being used.

I don't begrudge Daniel leaving if we cannot afford to keep him. This is where I hope Ossie has done the sums with Hayne, Poore, Tahu & co to ensure that enough $'s are left in the kit to retain Daniel.

It is making me puk where I continually read we are 'leaning to stay'. There should be no question that Daniel is staying. Shit we developed him. Leaning to stay to me means that you were always planning to go.

I think it's time daddy shut up, go back to his little farm & play with grapes while Daniel gets on with playing football.

I make these comment based on shit that I have been hearing for 15 weeks or so now & not just this story. I also make these comments 'cause we cannot afford to see Daniel leave. How long has it been since we have had a shit hot half. Daniel is our man.
    • Right on.
  • nobody was complaining when we signed Justin Poore. The dragons developed him into a state of origin player and instead of now reaping the rewards, he will be playing for the Eels. You win some, you lose some. I would love to see Morts stay with us but this is the nature of the business. we cant complain about losing players when we've gone out and signed 3 players for next year..
whether we like it or not, the mortimer's are legends. Just ask yourself how it you'd feel if Brett Kenney's kid or Sterlo's kid played for Manly? It is going to be a very hard descision for him but im glad money is not the main factor that is influencing him. I don't think at this stage, we could compete with dogs regarding room in salaray cap

Beside his outstanding skills, the most impressive thing about young mortimer for me is the way he has handled himself off the field. he is not media shy, he speaks well and he has shown good leadership skills. I know he is young, but i would not mind seeing him as our captain after Hindy retires in 3 years
    • Yeah Fiddy you are 100% correct.

Its in the tense (In regards to language) that Peter Mortimer speaks that gives me the urks. Peter always seems to speaking in terms that Parra is a transit lounge for Daniel.

In no way does any of my comments represent any ill feeling to Daniel. Daniel is an outstanding individual. It is a credit to his dad. His dad is a legend and a good bloke from all reports, but its way the Peter represents his son in the media and the feeling that I get that Parra is being used until it is convenient for Daniel to return to the dogs.

Lets not forget Noddy goes at the end of the year in 2010. So the timing is perfect. I would like to see Daniel sign in the off season to put this all to bed. If he goes to the dogs then lets develop Keating, Robo & Humble. No point further developing Daniel to see him go. If you ask me Peter has already made the decision.

Daniel is an outstanding player it would be a tragedy to see him go. The best allie that we have is that spirit within the club & the way the fans have adopted Daniel. Lets hope Daniel tells his dad that Parra is home.

As far as a kenny junior or a Sterling junior goes playing at Manly, well if they made their decision to go, then I would respect that. Would not be happy. But I would respect their decision. Lets not forget Reddy, Goodwin & Morris.
  • fully agree Active..Lets hope the dogs throw all their money at Thurston for 2011 so they have no ne left for Morts..
  • I have no problem with Mortimer weighing up his options. Furthermore, I think we can all agree that the Dogs will weigh in with a more lucrative offer than we can make for 2011 and beyond, however, the thing I take issue with is that we seem to hear more from Peter Mortimer regarding Daniel's contract negotiations than we do from Daniel - or his manager Steve Gillis - combined.

I understand he's still only a kid and guidance from his parents is still highly appropriate, but I think it would be more pertinent if the Mortimers kept talk of contract negotiation out of the public domain!

On the other hand, we can't be too critical of the role Peter Mortimer is playing, as one of the driving factors in re-signing Jarryd Hayne was his mother's insistence he stay loyal!
    • Well lets hope Daniel goes down the same road as hayne and stays loyal, and not worry about his fathers past.

But just like everyone else i agree that if he get's a better offer somewhere else- not just at the dogs, you can't blame him for taking it. Last week Paul Osborne came out and said that Hayne is the perfect player to base a clubs future around. Which is true the guy is a freak, but i also think the future will prosper with the likes of Mortimer, Reddy, Inu and Mannah. I think they should be priority signings.
  • Very good to know
